Any suggestions for books on family meetings/family nights? I'm a single father of 3 kids (4, 6, and 8), work F/T, live in the country, don't have any support, and simply don't have the time to research or brainstorm on what a family meeting or family night should consist of.... Life is just so hectic! I was hoping for a good consolidated resource I can reference in book form.

Wow.. Another great article.

Just wanted to comment on the Family Day Jar. We have this concept as well (we call it the "kitty") and it works wonders for our family days.

Last year, we saved up enough to have a family weekend at wonderland on the Gold Coast (Australia).

Thanks,
Charles

We have only one child, a son, now 17, and we have one family elder, my wife's Mom, now aged 78. It has sometimes been hard to find activities that work for all four of us. The 61 year age gap between son and Grandma is sometimes hard to bridge. This is especially so because Grandma is so positive and so active and self-directed, and our son is so laid back and mellow and hard to engage.

We had great family days on Sundays for many years, but it got harder as our son passed 14. He wanted to spend weekends with his friends, wasn't interested in our family activities, and generally became a party pooper. Now he says he misses family days. I wish we had been more creative.

On family meetings, we consider every activity in our home from meal planning to financial planning the responsibility of a committee of the whole. We have weekly meetings about our meals for the coming week before we go shopping, and we have our "favorite 21" meals on file cards. Everyone starts the meeting by picking a card.

A great book which has helped us with family meetings is Martin Edelston's "I-Power". This book contains dozens of great ideas for extracting all of the best ideas of everyone in the group.

we do this too in my (extended) family. we do this on Saturdays usually. I like the idea of the family meeting. I think I'll try to introduce that to my family too.

I also want to try and have a family nite too, where we spend an hour or two together after dinner just dedicated to talking or playing all together.
