I am one of those athletic jocks who has great mental and bodily energy but can't always find a way to make it productive, mostly because I don't switch tasks well. I get so absorbed in one thing that I have problems switching to another. One lesson I have learned is to occasionally tell myself it is ok just to work several hours one one thing instead of trying to break it up over several days. But I only do this once in a while. In general I try to keep a low number of work sessions on different topics that I switch between each day. Research, computer programing, and working out are my main three. I use a lot of the strategies from above. But sometimes, with my personality I get tired of multi-tasking and just want to dive into something and think about it for several hours, or a couple of days I give myself that gift every once in a while although it doesn't fit in with the typical knowledge worker profile.

Thanks Mike ... actually, I should note that the post was written by Scott Young, an excellent blogger -- I think it's a great post, and I'm appreciative of him writing it for Zen Habits.

Leo, thanks for this article/post. I am amazed at how a 10 minute walk around campus (and some fresh Baltimore air) does wonders for the hours that follow it.
