@Jane

There are several ways to make a sandwich not go soggy.

1. Use toast instead of just bread. A couple minutes in the toaster can make a sandwich much more stable.

2. Put a THIN layer of mayonnaise on both pieces of bread before anything else. Mayo, taste aside, is a oil based condiment which will keep the water out of the bread from the meat or other sandwich features. If you don't like the taste of mayo, reduced fat mayo tastes "less" mayonaisey. Remember, EXTREMELY thin. We're not doing this for taste, but to keep water out of the bread.

3. Use higher fiber breads. White bread is extremely low in fiber. The lower the fiber content in bread, the softer it can get. Use a multigrain bread which is somewhat sturdy and you'll have less softening.

4. Use "less wet condiments". The following condiments will release a lot of water into the sandwich if in the same baggy as the bread: Tomatoes, Lettuce, Onion, Bell Peppers. If suggestions 1-3 still leave you with soggy sandwiches, put all the items I listed in #4 here in a separate bag, then put them on just before enjoying.

I don't work I am a full time student. I save money by bringing my lunch and not eating on campus. There are no close places to eat around campus and the food on campus is way overpriced. You would easily spend $10-$15 a day at my university for lunch. Leo any suggestions on how to prevent sandwiches from getting soggy if you make them the night before? Also I most times I just end up making peanut butter because it is easiest but its gross. I feel like if I had more money I would not bring my lunch. But who knows maybe when I grow up I will be more used to it and there are other advantages to brown-bagging it that you have mentioned. Another good thing is it is green to make your own lunch becasue of all the packaging that is disposed of by fast-food.
