New Zen Habits posting schedule

I want to thank everyone for posting their comments on my Ask the Readers post about reducing my posts from 7 a week to 5 a week, and dropping one of the categories. I’ve been going through all your comments, tallying everything up, and have decided based on all your great input to make the following changes:

1) I’ll be taking weekends off, unless I absolutely have something I want to post, and then I’ll keep the weekend option open. But on most weeks, I don’t plan to post on weekends.

2) The two least popular categories, based on your responses, seem to be Finance and Family, followed by GTD and Health. However, based on some of your comments, I am not going to eliminate a category entirely. Here’s my proposed lineup:

  • Productivity/organization (takes the place of GTD)
  • Finance/family
  • Simplifying
  • Happiness
  • Health

I know this will probably disappoint some of you, but I think this is a mix that many of you will like, and it’s one that I feel comfortable with.

At the same time, I retain the option of diverging from these themes whenever I feel like it.

Also, I will be trying to get some good guest writers for the blog to post every 1-2 weeks. However, please don’t write to me to ask to do a guest post. These will be by invitation only, and I have already lined up a few, so I won’t have room for anyone who writes to me. This isn’t to be exclusionary or anything, but I want to maintain a high quality on this blog and can’t let everybody write for it — I’m looking for good writers.

So those of us that are established, published writers are not allowed to ask to write for this blog even if we send a resume and clips?

I for one am glad that you’re cutting down your posting schedule. I was going to take you off my reading list because you were updating too often. It’s hard to get things done ™ when your reading list keeps growing! I love what you’re doing, I’m sure that that new changes will work out.

Take care!

Here’s hoping that productivity section will continue to be heavily informed by GTD, as that was actually one of my favorite sections!

@Ron: Yes, GTD will still be included in the productivity section, but there will be other stuff as well, including stuff about other systems, my own advice, and organizational stuff. There were a lot of people who didn’t like the GTD stuff, and a lot who did, so I’m trying to find a good balance.

@Jessie: You can email me if you’re an established writer, but I just wanted to warn everyone that my schedule for guest writers is already full, so I can’t guarantee that I’d be able to add you in. Again, I don’t mean to be exclusionary or snobbish, but I’ve already sent out a bunch of invitations and most have been accepted and I expect others to be accepted as well. It’s a system that I just started and I like it and think it will work well for me.

Congratulations on a good decision, Leo. As a fellow blogger, I know the need to have a bit of time off … overall it benefits the readers when we can refresh ourselves, and we need time to do that, just like everybody else does.

Boo, the finance and family are my most favourite sections :) with Health a close third, and Simplicity/GTD/Happiness way at the back. Is there any way I can just subscribe via RSS to the topics/tags that interest me? Honestly I just skip by the GTD posts for the most part.

@Pam: Why not just skip over the posts you don’t like? I use Google Reader and if there’s something in the feed that doesn’t interest me, I just don’t read it.

Awesome, I dig the new schedule! 8) Especially the switch from GTD to “productivity.”

You the man, Leo.
If you lead, we will follow.

@Pam: I’m sorry if you’re not happy with my decision, but I had to take the majority of readers into account, as well as what I’m comfortable with. Family and finance are the least favorite of the majority of people, but I am not eliminating them — I’m just going to have them combined to one day.

I’ll look into how to subscribe to a single tag — if anyone knows the answer, I’d appreciate it.

FYI, by deciding before waiting a day you are biasing against those people who only check on weekdays or even just check once a day. Waiting a day or two (instead of less than one) might get you different results.

Tip: subscribing to a specific tag/channel on Zen Habits.

For instance, an RSS feed of GTD related posts only:
http://zenhabits.net/tags/gtd/feed

The same goes for all the tags that Leo has defined (see sidebar “Categories”).

Hope this helps!

@Erika: I understand your point, and it’s a valid one, but I thought it would be OK as I’ve decided not to eliminate any of the theme days — just to rearrange them. I hope that’ll be OK with everyone.

@gtdfrk: Thanks for sharing that solution!

I only discovered this site a few days ago and didn’t feel right about commenting on the way it works. Zenhabits.net has quickly become a favorite site and I look forward to learning a lot. Over all I find the site pleasing, easy to navigate, and full of useful information.

Will you be rearranging the categories on the left also?

Personally, I like your finance section quite a bit, but I am glad you are changing your “GTD” section to “productivity/organization.”
