Why the 30-day Challenge Worked (with a June Challenge)
During the month of May, dozens of people signed up for the Zen Habit May Challenge, and I’m pleased to say that it was a ringing success!
The Challenge worked for many of the participants, due to their hard work, and the power of group motivation.
Let’s take a look at what we did and why the 30-day Challenge works.
First, the Challenge is simply a way to form a habit by trying to do something every day for a month — and at the end of the day, if it’s successful, you’ll have a new habit. I challenged myself to 30 straight days of exercise, and while many other people who joined the Challenge decided to do some form of exercise as well, it really doesn’t matter what your habit is. Some people decided to try to wake early, or to drink more water, or to meditate, or to get to work early.
Everyone signed up for the daily check-in email, which I send out once a day with a progress report on everyone’s habit (well, for those who reported in for that day). There were times when people struggled, and some didn’t report in, but there was a strong group of people who did an amazing job during the month of May (and you all know who you are!).
There were some who exercised every single day, or almost every day. Others woke earlier, or got to work earlier. Others meditated, did yoga, drank water, walked … all kinds of positive life changes occurred, and it was truly inspiring.
Here’s what worked:
- Commitment. Just the act of committing to the Challenge, and setting a measurable goal, and declaring it to a bunch of others, is a huge step towards making the habit change a success.
- Accountability. The daily check-in email makes you want to do your daily habit, so you can report your success to others. If you don’t want to report, you don’t have to, so there’s no real fear of embarrassment, but there is a positive feeling (reward) you get when you report that you did your habit today.
- Encouragement. There is also value in reporting your struggles. For example, when I got sick for a few days, I asked the group to motivate me. They were extremely encouraging, and I got back into my habit. But it wasn’t just for me — people encouraged each other, and it was very heart-warming. And not just encouragement for the habit changes — there were people who went through other things in their lives, and the group lent their encouragement, prayers, thoughts and feelings. It was touching, I have to admit.
- Inspiration. When you see everyone else doing so great, it’s inspiring. If they can do it, so can I! And there were some really inspiring people in the group — a lot of them!
Now, you don’t need to join the Zen Habits Monthly Challenge to achieve a positive habit change, but I would recommend you find a group — online or off — to help you stick to your habit change. There are plenty of online forums and community groups to help with these kinds of things — the power of a group can help leverage your power to change a habit.
This post is not only to analyze why the Challenge works, but to announce the June Challenge!
For myself, my June Challenge is to continue my daily exercise habit change while cutting sweets out of my diet.
I invite you join the June Challenge by signing up in the comments below. If you sign up in the comments, I will sign you up for the daily email. If you were in the May Challenge, you will still need to sign up below if you want to continue into the June Challenge.
A couple of guidelines:
- Choose an easy goal. Don’t decide to do something really hard, at least for now. Later, when you’re good at habit changes, you can choose something harder. But for now, do something you know you can do every day.
- Choose something measurable. You should be able to say, definitely, whether you were successful or not today. If you choose exercise, set a number of minutes or something similar (20 minutes of exercise daily, for example). Whatever your goal, have a measurement.
- Be consistent. You want to do your habit change at the same time every day, if possible. If you’re going to exercise, do it at 7 a.m. (or 6 p.m.) every day, for example. This makes it more likely to become a habit.
- Report regularly. I would recommend you check-in every day, or at least every 2 days. Those who checked in every day were much, much more successful than those who didn’t.
So challenge yourself this month!

I didn’t stick with the May challenge but I’m *determined* to stick with the June challenge… and I now how several weeks of my diet under my belt to help me with commitment this month.
My plan is to exercise *daily* - maybe only 15-20 minutes, but every day.
Please add me to the email list.

This is my first challenge! Today is moving day, life transition day, and this month will take place in different locations with different roles. My first goal is thus to walk daily for a minimum of 20 minutes in the morning. As I am moving closer to work, I will do this every day I am going into work but I will also walk on weekends. If I am not in town, I will walk 20 minutes but expect it will be later in the day. Cheers to all you habit formers.

That’s funny Mollie. I have the same goal: becoming a better photographer. Therefore I want to take a picture every day, inspired by the 72-hour on http://www.tipsfromthetopfloor.com/forum . Every evening I want to determine my challenge… (today it’s “animal, vegetable, mineral” - a bit difficult to start with…)

My goal is to get up earlier during the week (I am not ready to give up my weekends of sleeping in). I have three kids and a long work commute so every morning is a mad rush. Starting on Monday I want to get up at 6 am, so I can have a little quiet time to myself before waking everyone up.
Deb Says:

Please include me in the June Challenge.
Deb:I am going to try the exercise daily habit - again. And I want to drink at least 6 glasses of water a day. As well as the daily check-in - I am working out a points reward system - such as 5 points for reaching my goal, minus 10 if I miss it, and an extra point for each glass of water above 6. Any suggestions are appreciated.
David Says:

I started on the May challenge mid-may with the goal of making it to work by 8am every day. I missed 2 days, but one of those was only by 2 minutes. So I feel I’m doing pretty well considering I didn’t have any outside support. So in addition to continuing to get to work on time every day, I am going to try to walk for 20 minutes a day, starting at lunch today.

Over the next 30 days, I will complete the Cool Running “Couch-to-5K” program, but twice as fast (six runs per week instead of the suggested three).

At first I thought I’d declare some Great Productivity Goal like
Pick one MIT every day and do it
It sounds so simple but I think it may be too challenging to do as my first challenge so I’ll start simple:
pick up and put away my clothes, every day
I know it sounds simple and too easy but it is really amazing how my clothes pile up all over my bedroom. I’ve tried working on this as a habit and failed so now I’m telling everyone here that I have one simple goal for June :)
If I can do this, next month I’ll try the clutterbuster challenge:
put things back where they belong, immediately after use/acquisition/discovery (or at least make sure the person who should, like my two teeny tikes, does)

So what do I want to make a habit? I want to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day and drink more water as well as keep to a healthy diet. So no sweets, crisps, cheese (love my cheese) or fizzy/alcoholic drinks for me.

This sounds just like what I need. You can count me in!!! I want to wake up no later than 4:45 each weekday morning. Sign me up with this goal. (I say no earlier because some mornings I have to be at work one to two hours early, so on those days it will be 3:45 and 2:45 respectively.)
Beth Says:

Sure, I’m in. I’ll get into the shower by 6:10 every morning.
I also succeeded in a self-inflicted challenge a couple months ago when I chose to freelance as an IT project manager. Every day I reached out to make contact with someone who I haven’t talked with for a while. Friends, former co-workers, family. I doubt it’s sustainable as a regular habit, but it’s certainly a great way to build your network, and the dividends (i.e., tangible job opportunities and the satisfaction of getting back in touch) pay back fairly quickly!

I’m up for the challenge again :-)
I thought a lot about what my June goal will be. The list really helped me stick to my May goal (40+ min. exercise/day) when life got crazy. I didn’t make it 100% of the time, but I’m proud of what I did do, and I strive to improve in the coming month.
My June goal: Make daily to-do list first thing in the morning and complete the list each day. I will continue (and increase) my May habit by setting the daily recurring task: “exercise 60+ minutes”
I look forward to continuing the Zen Challenge email list, it is something I have come to really enjoy each day.

Please sign me up for another challenging month. My goal is to continue with the morning exercise. I will add one new habit: I hate to put my clothes back into the closets when I have washed them. There are clothes everywhere. I will deal with that dark side of myself in June.

I’ve just discovered this blog-great info! Count me in on the June challenge. I want to go to bed earlier-in bed by 10:30 and be up at 6am. Hopefully, this will be the motivation I need!

Yes, please sign me up. June will be the month to declutter my home. We still have lots of business related paper files to keep, but a huge pile can be cleaned up. Alas, all the papers have to go through the document shredder …

Yes, please. I want to walk at least 15 minutes every day, but if I walk 30 I can skip a day (weekends only)! I’ll do the math…
SO do-able!
Thanks. I’ve always needed the accountability part. This may do the trick!

OK, let’s do it!
- I’ll get up at 7am everyday (now it’s 8am and THAT is tough :).
- I’ll exercise for at least 10 minutes a day and go to the gym at least once a week.
- Every day I’ll spend at least half an hour learning a foreign language.
I’ve been getting to do all of those for quite some time. Let’s see if some discipline helps. :)

I started the May challenge a bit late, but now have 26 straight days at the gym behind me. Though it has cost me over 3# of body fat (tough price to pay, I know), it has definitely been worth it.
Time to “synchronize” and choose something else for this month. Hmm, how about this: FINISH ONE DRAWING EVERY DAY. Starting today.
All the best to everyone with your challenges!

Sign me up. I started two days ago going to bed after work (2300 CST) and reading for an hour and then waking at 5:30. I have made it the two days that I have been trying. The weekend is going to be hard to keep the habit. Hopefully this will help keep me motivated.

I’d like to sign up again…adding 3 more back exercises to the twice-daily routine. Hopefully in a month or two my back will be healthier, and I’ll be able to practice the martial arts techniques that are hard on my back. I want to be able to do them on my black belt test!

The May challenge made me realize how much walking I do as part of my daily life — since I often counted “transit walking” as exercise on days I didn’t actually exercise. So, my goal for June
1). get up at 6:30 am
2). 30 minutes of pure exercise daily
I admire those of you above who are able to include “without hitting snooze,” but I don’t have that much faith in my habit-changing abilities yet! Since I want to be up at 6:30, I will have to set my alarm a little earlier to allow for the snooze habit — hopefully that will help me push the wake-up time to 6 (without snooze!) in a future challenge.

I’m in! I did ok with the May challenge (my goal was at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise a day first thing in the morning) but my record was far from perfect and I don’t really feel like I firmly established that habit. So I’m going to give it another go. In thinking about why I struggled so much I think it had a lot to do with point 3 - doing the habit at the same time every day. Too often I didn’t make time in the morning and tried to squeeze it in later and then deadlines, and well… life, intervened and it didn’t happen. So this month I’m going to focus on timing: exercise every day right after breakfast.
