I too live my life by the Golden Rule. As a young child I was taught to treat people the way in which I would want to be treated. I live my life by being respectful and kind to others. Living my life this way makes me a much happier person. I wrote an e-book titled, Living Happy: You Hold the Keys, in which I discuss the importance of being kind and respectful to others for happiness.

However, I think it is also important to point out that although you may be kind and respectful to others, does not necessarily guarantee that you’ll receive the same in return. And that’s okay. Everyone is different and is entitled to be who they are. As my mother often said, “You can’t change other people, you can only change yourself.“ Therefore, if someone decides to live their life being disrespectful and mean, so be it. However, that is not the way in which I choose to live my life. Remember, the way you live your life is a choice and I choose to be kind and respectful to others. It’s what I know. I also believe that God see’s your heart when you are kind to others and you receive his blessings for it. This article started with the bible verse, “… thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Lastly, thanks for the great practical tips to living by the Golden Rule. These are tips that I incorporate into my life everyday. The first tip reminded me of a quote I read last year by an unknown author which states, “Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” Also, everyday I live my life by helping to make a difference in this world. I do many things designed to empower, inspire and motivate others to living their best life. As a matter of fact, one of the quotes I end every email with is that by Gandhi which states, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”

Thanks,

Karma - what goes around comes around.

To some extent I've always believed in Karma, however, it's only when you really sit down, think about and look for it, it seems to be true.

Do good things, good things happen - often small things but they add up. Why?

Because if you're interacting with people, and your attitude is positive, you'll notice more positive results. If you're feeling good because you helped someone in some small way - that will rub off on your next interaction, and so forth.

So when you step out the door today, try to be a little more positive than yesterday. Smile at the person you always pass on the street. If you normally smile, say hi or otherwise acknowledge them a little more.

Changes in your attitudes and behaviours don't have to be drastic ones to be beneficial!

I've often looked at the Golden Rule in the inverse: you will be treated the same way you treat others. It seems to go with Jesus' teachings in the gospel that indicate we will be judged according to the way we judge others. Since Jesus was talking about the "here and now" as much as "yet to come", it seems to be really a restatement of the same idea.

If I will be treated the same way I treat others, and I will be judged the same way I judge others, then it stands to reason that I should treat others as well as I possibly can and that I should avoid judgment as much as possible.

Thank you for creating a space for us to explore these ideas.

I really like the prayer at point #18. Especially:
“May I gain no victory that harms me or my opponent.”

We often don’t look beyond the immediate victory to see the bigger outcomes for ourselves, our opponents or the others nearby.

17."Notice how it makes you feel. Notice how your actions affect others, especially when you start to treat them with kindness, compassion, respect, trust, love. But also notice the change in yourself. Do you feel better about yourself? Happier? More secure? More willing to trust others, now that you trust yourself? These changes come slowly and in small increments, but if you pay attention, you’ll see them."

The other day I had someone tell me "ANYONE WHO THINKS ABOUT THE "GOLDEN RULE' can't possible be thinking about what they might or might not "GET BACK".

I responded with this comment "Very interesting comments. When I Smile at some one who is having a bad day who feels better? Them? Me? Both? or and unknown number?"

We had a very healthy exchange of ideas and comments but I just thought of #17 from here and wished I could have quoted it.

Thank you for this list and how much good you are doing in the world. May we all "feel better" and all live the real meaning of the Golden Rule.

Thanks for the excellent article.
If followed throughout the life it will provide amazing result.
Everything you say; every thought you entertain; and everything you do has a direction, which serves as an advance or a retreat in respect to your pursuit of excellence. Everything, regardless of size or intent, has bottom-line consequences; therefore, everything counts — this is the golden rule of excellence.
