6 Annoying Fetishes I Talk Too Much About

Note: If you’re looking for useful information, you can skip this post. I just felt like having fun and taking a few minutes to break from my usual beaten path.
You know how there are some things that people are way too proud of? That they buy T-shirts for and spout off about endlessly? Things like iPhones and wine and serving in the military.
I’m guilty of that on so many levels.
This short post just serves as a confession, to get the guilt of it all off my chest, and to remind myself to wean myself of these things.
Sometimes it’s good to take a step back, analyze ourselves, and give ourselves the blunt, honest truth.
So here are 6 things I obsess over and am way too proud of and talk way too much about, annoyingly.
- Coffee. Well, I don’t actually talk about this much, but I do love coffee, and I know that coffee geeks are very annoying. We make such a big deal about how we HAVE to have our coffee, and what our favorite coffee is, and how much we drink. I’ve actually drastically reduced my coffee consumption, but I’m still a coffee geek at heart. Boy are we annoying.
- Macs. I’m actually a recovering Macaholic. And Mac fans can be the most annoying on earth (sorry, fellow Mac fans, I love you all). I’m in between Macs right now, but I’ve been a fan since the 80s, and actually still have some geeky relics of my Mac addiction (including a very old (and hole-ridden) T-shirt with a picture of Clarus the Dogcow that says, of course, “Moof!”). God, what a geek I am.
- Gmail. I came late to the Gmail game, discovering it only a year and a half ago, when a friend of mine said, “Dude, why aren’t you using Gmail?” Now I can’t imagine living without it, and I annoyingly say to friends and family who are still using Hotmail or Yahoo or (gasp) Outlook, “Dude, why aren’t you using Gmail?” And then, when they tell me they haven’t even heard of it, I proceed to spout off for 10 minutes about the virtues of Gmail. And then I secretly consider disowning my friends and family for not knowing about Gmail. Apologies to Hotmail or Yahoo or Outlook fans — you guys are great.
- Firefox. I know that Firefox is all the rage, so many people who use the Internet regularly qualify as fellow Firefox freaks, but I’m still amazed by the vast numbers of people in this world who still use Internet Explorer, and worse yet, haven’t even heard of Firefox. My friends and family among them. And I try to get them to convert, as if I’m some kind of Firefox evangelist, going door to door. I’m not sure why this matters so much to me. But I’m seriously considering disowning my friends and family.
- Veganism. I’m not actually a full vegan, as I still eat some foods that have eggs or dairy, but I’m slowly transitioning to complete veganism and fully subscribe to the vegan philosophy. My favorite T-shirt, at the moment, is my worn Herbivore Cross T-shirt, which is so comfortable. People, of course, always ask me about it, and that gives me a chance to evangelize about veganism (while they smugly wave a greasy burger in front of my face). I think vegans and vegetarians are nearly as smug as meat eaters. :)
- Simplicity. I’ve been a fan of simplicity for a decade now, and I can safely call myself a minimalist. I would brag about a minimalist T-shirt, but I think that would just be a plain T-shirt with no logos or slogans (and I actually own a few like that). The thing is, I talk about simplicity to people I know too much, I think, and that’s just annoying.
What about you guys? Have any annoying fetishes that you talk too much about? Are you an evangelist about anything? Have geeky T-shirts that show off your fetishes? Let us know in the comments.

Well, I might get me one of those new iMacs, as they are droolingly minimalist, and my old PC is getting slow. Although I might just wait for Leopard to come out. I think that’s why I love the Mac so much - their minimalist aesthetics. I’m not a huge fan of Steve Jobs as a person, but I love his aesthetics.

I am totally with you on Gmail and Firefox. I’m also annoying about RSS feeds (via Google Reader, of course). I don’t know how my life existed prior to discovering these three things. (Of course, some people might argue that they don’t know where my life has gone since discovering those three things…)

I came to the Firefox party a little late, but I’ve been evangelizing it like crazy! In the past year, I’ve become a big fan of Amy “Tightwad Gazette” Dacyczyn, too.

With you on 3 & 4. Going to convert to Linux soon as I’m out of school. Can’t give up meat (I have a problem keeping weight more than losing it and I have a nut allergy).
I’ve become an annoying RSS fan, since I recently moved my journal from a social network to its own site. So I pester everyone constantly to get a feed reader and free themselves of social network sites (which has worked surprisingly well for me, considering I have gmail + reader)
Leo Says:

@Christine: Tightwad Gazette is a must-read classic! I’m a big fan of Amy’s too. I should do a post on her and the Gazette, no?
@pinkpillsanity: Interesting … I’d like to hear more about this … I’m not clear on what you mean by a social network (there are different types) and how you use your feed reader in relation to your journal. Tell me more! :)

Blogging.
I have been sucked into the world of blogs (I refuse to say the word, “blogosphere” - oh wait - nevermind. Yeah, I say that too) and am constantly chattering about the structure of blogs, promoting blogs, the interesting, useful, and entertaining content on blogs, blog blog blog. I even use stupid made up words now like being Blogfuddled or Blogwildered.
Help me.
I’m also guilty of the Mac addiction, as a recent convert from the “I can do anything on Windows that you can do on a Mac but for a lot cheaper” crowd. Its the biggest thing I’ve been wrong on since thinking that Commodore was the wave of the future.

Instead of coffee, my “fetish” is water. It’s everything-free (except for filling-ness), a much healthier choice than coffee, and easy and dirt-cheap to get. Since I hate tap water, I bought a $30 purifier from PUR and now I love water. The filters are $20, though, replaced every three months or so. I always give my coffee-drinker friends a hard time about how much coffee they drink…especially since I don’t drink any heh heh.
I’m almost crazy about Yahoo! Mail (beta) because of the Outlook-style interface, although it is painstakingly slow. >.

Fitness. The ultimate luxury, which no amount of money can buy. I don’t usually talk about it in those terms, which would be really annoying, but I’m sure my friends occasionally must think “Is he still talking about his new diet/workout/core routine/supplement regimen?” Probably because I was on athletic teams my whole life and didn’t have to think about this stuff as it was dictated to me, and now it’s interesting to think about for myself.
I used to evangelize some of the technology mentioned above, but then I’d take get a pouty “nobody listens to me” attitude when the evanglee wouldn’t adpot Gmail, RSS, del.icio.us, Firefox, or whatever.

I’m a Copic Marker freak. That’s not the official site, but it’s the one with the best deal on them. As an artist, I don’t think the other leading marker brands even compare. They come in 310 gorgeous colors and I’ve got close to 250 of them. One day, gadget, one day.
Whenever one of my artist-friends mentions anything about markers, I have to preach at them about the benefits of Copics over Trias or Prismacolors. It’s probably REALLY annoying.

I talk too much about blogs. And send people long, long lists of blogs I read, personally annotated by me… expecting to hear back from them in-depth reports on their thoughts about the sites on my lists. (That’s plural ‘lists’, because my blog interests change considerably over a year’s time…. so I update people on the next set of must read blogs.) Anyway, I never do hear back from them (well, they talk to me about other things, but not about blogs). Ah, well.

Total treehugger here. I tend to mention my bike at work a lot (especially since I am the only one in a large building who doesn’t drive). I also talk about how I go six weeks on one tank of gas. I talk about reducing my meat consumption. I talk about how annoying it is when people leave conference room lights on. I talk about how much paper we waste in the office. I talk about eating organic foods. I even make note pads out of used envelopes and scrap papers for my coworkers. I’m sure there are some right-wingers in the office who want to club me right after the baby seal.

what a great post! you may have said that it wasn’t useful information, but its always great to hear more about the blogger you read, and sometimes the information does sink in about certain things. Especially because we come here of our own free will to read, as opposed to being cornered by someone wanting to tell you all about their latest thing. Which is something I do ad infinitum I have to admit. I’m also a tree hugger, firefox and gmail addict, blog reader, and basically whatever the latest greatest thing I’ve heard about, I’m trying to convert the next 100 people I meet to it. Bad! :)

Web tools, other than what’s already been mentioned (firefox, gmail, google reader):
del.icio.us — everyone using it a bit makes the internet much better organized.
Firefox extensions: Gmail Manager. Better Gmail. Fullerscreen (for those pop-up windows that don’t allow you to resize!).
Books: Getting Things Done (David Allen). Be Heard Now (Lee Glickstein). Love is the Killer App (Tim Sanders). Type-Z Guide to Success (Marc Allen). Good Business (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi).
Movie: An Inconvenient Truth (more intellectual) or The 11th Hour by Leonardo di Caprio (more entertaining)
Food: local and organic - tastier and better for your health and the environment. Choosing seafood: http://www.oceansalive.org/eat.cfm?subnav=bestandworst&link=hp
and http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_regional.aspx
Work: find work that’s at the intersection of (1) what you’re good at, (2) what puts you into “flow” (as defined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi), and (3) what you truly believe to be good for the world.

I have not yet resorted to T-shirt advertising of my geeky ways, but it’s close … I think having a blog completely about simplicity is bad enough.
Other fetishes include: my dogs (yes, people actually tire of hearing about the 2 labs), life purpose, eating healthy … and last but not least, people that don’t “get” it (think Darwin Awards).

Also a vegetarian but I’m in a verrrry traditional region so I get way too much anger if I wax poetic about saving cows and the ozone layer. Looking forward to going more and more vegan:)
Here’s something I’m stumped on: what’s with this Great Holy and Magical appeal of Firefox? I installed it so I can make sure my webdesigns look good in it, but I can’t seem to fall in love. Fonts look really jaggedy to me, that are smooth and pretty in IE. IE7 has a great interface, so I’m enjoying it.
But I feel like I may be the only designer in the world who prefers IE. What am I missing and how do I get over hating the appearance of my fonts?

@ daisybones: chances are you’ve got font smoothing turned on in IE7 (it asks you about it when you first use it I think) but not in Windows itself. Run control desk.cpl @0,2, click the Effects button and make sure Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts is checked and says ClearType. With this turned on, I’ve never noticed a different in font smoothness in Firefox and IE.

@Leo: Hey, the Tightwad Gazette would be a good topic. Amy Dacyczyn took two skills/interests — graphic design and saving money — and combined them with a lot of humor and megautility. A great example of creative simplicity.
Her newsletters were in a way a pre-Internet blog: She would combine her own articles with loads of snippets from her readers — including one from my wife.
Tthen she leveraged all that into three books and appearances on Oprah. And when she was out of ideas, she walked away from it all. Gotta love her.

I’m actually a soon-to-be Mac convert. I was born and raised on a PC and up until Windows Vista, never imagined buying a Mac. But I came to the conclusion in the last few months (and after trying Vista, IE7 and Office 2007) that Windows and Microsoft are going downhill fast while Macs are flying high. For this reason I’m now having the same reaction with PC people, telling them the benefits of Macs. I almost feel a little hypocritical since technically I’m still on a PC, but oh well.
I have the same issue with the Opera browser though. I swear by that browser and it’s probably the most innovative out there. Yet it receives little to no attention. I catch myself sometimes not liking Firefox just because it gets so much attention and in my eyes, isn’t as good of a browser.
But oh well. That’s my life in a nutshell.

Too many great comments to respond to! Very quickly, a couple responses:
* Re: Firefox vs. Safari … I think it’s often a matter of what browser you’re used to. It took me a couple of days to get used to switching to Firefox, and now I’m hooked. I’ve played with Safari for awhile but didn’t like it much — again, probably just because it’s not my usual browser.
* Mai, I use multiple Gmail addresses (actually just two), and it allows me to switch the sender address easily … the problem you face only occurs if you’re trying to send from a non-Gmail address, which makes sense to me. If you switch all your email addresses to Gmail, I don’t think you’ll have that problem.
* What are the benefits of Firefox? Don’t get me started! Just a few, though: security (compared to IE), the great extensions available for it, the keyboard shortcuts, the keyword bookmarks, the keyword searches … seriously, the use of those last three have made my browsing a SUPER speedy process. For example, I can open up any of the dozens of websites I go to (blogs, stats, banking, email, reader, google docs, etc) with a few keystrokes. I can search amazon, imdb, wikipedia, and all the other places I search with a few keystrokes, and I can browse almost completely with the keyboard. Wow … it makes browsing on the other browsers seem so slow and cumbersome. OK, I told you not to get me started!

2. Saving. Anything: water, plastic bottles, paper, MONEY, electricity, gas, … time(?)
3. Blogging. Ouch! I am trying to quit the time I spend on blogs (mine as well as others). So far no success.
4. Gmail. I didn’t know I was obsessed with it until I read people’s comments. Guess what I am doing next? inviting all my non-gmail friends to gmail!
5. Firefox: How can I stop myself. It’s so squeaky clean and very fast. I THINK. oops!

“Macs. God, what a geek I am.”
Buy me one, then… R$6.000 bucks here in Brazil=D

I am irritatingly superior about having no cell phone, not wearing a watch, and being free from the burned of having too much money.
But thankfully I don’t actually talk to people about these things. I do write about them.

I think I talk too much about the Web and blogging, oh yeah, and my Macs and Starbucks.

Books — I talk about the books I’m reading; the books I’ve ordered from the library; the books I’ve bought at the bookstore, yard sales and borrowed from friends. I love talking about books. I’m sure it is pretty annoying for my friends — especially the non-readers.

Esperanto, the international language that really works.
I sucked at high school Spanish but I was able to use Esperanto for real, everyday communication after only one year of spare-time study. I chat and blog in Esperanto and I’ve even been interviewed in Esperanto.
The Internet is international, and Esperanto is a much more reasonable solution to the language problem than expecting the whole world to spend time and money learning bad English.

I talk too much about my fave actress :-)
She’s so talented, a brilliant person and yet underrated, so I’m always bragging about her work and the critical praise she gets to friends who can’t give a damn!
