@Terry and anybody with a chaotic kid : Its not your fault. Its a personality trait. My mother was very organized, I am chaotic. Now this doesn't actually hinder me in any way on my way through live. I find my stuff, know where it is and I am flexible, since I can live with chaos and my plans are not rigid. If A doesn't work, I am open to B. So to help your kid, keep in mind that there are at least 2 types of personality. The organized one, who can put everything in one central place and the flexible one, who puts stuff where it is needed (looks mostly chaotic if not done right, but isn't). So insist on end results, but not on one way. Insist that the room is clean enough not to start its own live, but don't fixate on the right way to archive this. Insist your kid is on time for important things (meetings), but let them find their own way of getting there. There is no cure for chaos, but managing to finish projects, find stuff and be on time are the essential points in life and work. The rest is negotiable. People overlook chaotic desks, if the person sitting at this desk knows exactly what he/she is doing and delivers as promised. And I stopped hording anything except books, I like the look of full bookcases and libraries, and cups (only one at a time), they live in the (closed) cupboard and I use a different one every day.

So you’ve cleared out the clutter? Here’s how to stay organized for good...

After you’ve got your chaos under control, how do you keep the clutter from creeping back? We asked Vicki Norris, author of Restoring Order to Your Home, for her strategies for staying ahead of the mess.

Thank you for the valuable pointers.

My wife and I are constantly talking about cleaning up and decluttering. We both were pack-rats before we met. Then we combined a few decades of our things together and.......you get the picture!

Minimal and simple is the goal. The hard part is detaching emotionally from our "stuff". We all just need to remember; no matter what emotional history stuff entails, it is still just stuff.

Bless you for providing this perspective and strategy. I think a well ordered home is a reflection of a well ordered mind. Clutter seems to be a way of life rather than a result. I will visit this list often for inspiration.

Hi Leo,

I'm looking for minimalist furniture for my future flat and I was wondering what companies that sell such specific type of objects would you recommend? Or perhaps in what companies have you seen minimalist objects that everybody could check them out for their homes?

Best regards,

Tim
