I grew up in a house that was ALWAYS clean. I mean it. There was just mom, dad and me, true. No pets.
I remember mother did the same things every day; in addition to cooking and cleaning up after meals she dusted, made beds, straightened up, but there was hardly ever anything to straighten.vacuumed, cleaned the one bathroom, and it seems like she mopped every day too.
We could never leave the house until stuff was done. She didn't want help, she wanted to do it her way. Daddy took out trash and did repairs, etc. I tried cleaning up after school when she took a temporary job once, but she fussed about everything I did when she got home. I was glad when she quit the job.
I married at 18, I wonder why, and eventually acquired four kids, dogs, cats and innumerable dust bunnies. I sometime wish I had been more like mother when the kids were growing up, but I just couldn't. One thing she always did though was to put things away immediately, wash dishes immediately, make beds before your feet hardly hit the floor. I guess it would be called the clean as you go method. I am 70 now and keep a pretty neat house since it's only me and, still, cats and dogs.

There are a lot of good tips here.

Vinegar is a great disinfectant, and good for cleaning floors if they're not too terribly dirty.

A good way to keep your show clean is to keep a shower squeegee. Just squeegee off the walls when you get out.

Method makes a natrual shower spray that works decent. The Ylang-Ylang smells great!

You have to be careful with the bleach sprays. They will pit your chrome.

My hard and fast rules are always clean the kitchen up every night - only takes mintues when you keep it clean - and wipe down the bathroom before bed. Again - only takes minutes - Then the bulk of your housework is already done.

With a great plan and a tiny little bit of discipline, you can have a clean house all of the time. And you don't have to keep journals, or do weird shoe routines.
