Hi all. Perhaps the idea has been mentioned (I haven't read through every post in detail) but I wanted to share a great pdf about maintaining a clutter-free home. I found it online a few months ago and it's been working like a charm for me:

www.virtualmvp.com/graphics/Conquer_clutter.pdf

The basic idea is to set hard physical limits on your stuff. For example, only one bookcase for the books. You can have as many books as you want so long as it'll fit onto that bookshelf. However, once it's full, you'll have to throw a book out for every new one you buy.

Nothing else has worked nearly so well for me. Under this rule of thumb, I can keep enough "stash" for my activities to be productive and I can also have new things. However, neither overruns my life with clutter.

(By the way, I love this rule of thumb all the more because, after practicing it for a few months, I find that it's very judo-ish. It doesn't fight my desire for acquisition. Rather, it changes my incentive structure so that I don't want to buy things anymore.)

Hope this helps. :)
