Ask the Readers: What Is Your Dream?

Yesterday’s post, How to Doggedly Pursue Your Dreams in the Face of Naysayers, seems to have struck a cord with many people.

Dreams can be powerful things.

So today I’d like to ask you two questions:

1. What is your dream?

2. What action will you take today to get closer to that dream?

That action might be something as simple as scheduling time for tomorrow to make plans … it might be Googling your dream to find some resources or inspiration … it might be writing the dream down and giving it some thought. It could be anything, as long as it’s something.

Leave your answers in the comments, or continue the discussion in the Zen Habits forums.

I blog about this Japanese artist called YUI, so right now my dream is to become her interpreter *blush* Ok to be more practical, attend her concert and meet her fans from all over the world.

My plans? I have secured a scholarship to be one year exchange student (now just have to find a university), I’m going to take Japanese Proficiency Test and TOEFL, and try to be more productive, instead of slacking around (read blogs such as Zen Habits helped too, thanks!)

Greetings from Malaysia =D (another dream is reach financial freedom on 40. I’m saving up 50 bucks every month in bank, not planning to touch that account)

Hi Leo, thank you for the inspiring post yesterday. I’ve constantly struggled with naysayers among my family and close friends, which can often discourage you from pursuing your biggest dreams. Thanks for the motivation to keep going!

#1. My dream right now is to relocate to Thailand for 6 months to a year, continue to do freelance blog design and consulting services for global clients, and focus my blog on this type of motivation for other college students and young professionals.

#2. Today, I resolve to review and clarify motivational/goal-setting content to discuss at my website (for personal empowerment and for the benefit of my readers =)

Thanks again. I believe I will write up a review of your article–it was great!

My dream is to live on a planet where most of the people have live in balance with nature, where there are no wars, where people are reasonably healthy and more important at peace with themselves and others.

Start with yourself they say, so I meditated today and was kind to my fellow men.

In the meantime, I dream of expanding my Practitioner program to thousands of students all over the world, writing at least one book every two years, and assisting as many people as I can in stepping fully into their potential as Divine beings and living their Soul purpose with utter authenticity. I’m working on that, too … new website for my modality, Soul Realignment is under construction right now.

And then there’s world peace … :-)

My dream is to speak/write fluent Japanese, Korean, Italian, and French. I also want to be a magazine editor, or at least a full-time writer, maybe eventually write that book that’s been on my mind since I was 12 or actually keep a blog going. I would also like to travel to Japan and South Korea.

I’ve already taken some steps and am teaching myself Japanese (although a class is preferable…so a step there is to look at classes/schools). For my dream career, I am doing my research and trying to step up my skills. I’m also going to be looking at internships.

I have been told many times that I am a dreamer. And I am realising right now, that I maybe am. I have changed my goals life so many times that I got lost. And lost out on many things, that I care not to mention for the moment.

I know I am going to sound as if I am high on something, but I am serious, life is too important to important to be wasted on dreams, that will not benefit later Money is not one of them, unless you give it away, and keep what you need to support your self and your family.

But if I do know one goal I had for such a long time. That is to lead a good life and please my creator. All else in life comes second.

I don’t know how many people here are religious. I believe in the after life, I also believe I will go one of two ways (Heaven or Hell). And I definitely want to end up on the former. However, there is a lot that need to be done to ensure my place there.

If you are wondering what religion I might be following, it is Islam.

I used to have the same dream as Martin, at the top of the comments for this post (living from my photographs).

But I’m not so sure nowadays. I find my best work comes when I’m working free of commercial contraints…

So I think I’m in between dreams at the moment. Ot at least trying to find a commercial aspect which doesn’t hinder my creative flow… but that could well come from outside of photography. I get the feeling that dreams, like the dreams we have when we sleep, can take quite unexpected twists and turns…

P Says:

Sorry but this does not work for me. “Go for your dream” is a typical nonsense. It means you will spend your time chasing some distant goal and you will never catch it since it is a dream and as such, it is always one step ahead of you. You will imagine yourself in a situation that might not ever occure and you will waste a lot of energy working towards the “dream.” What I try to do is to focus on the present rather than on the future. So my “dream” is not to have dreams since they do not make you happy, they even make you upset…

P, it’s not the mere dreaming, nor reaching, nor craving for a distant dream that makes one happy. It’s the everyday process of giving your life a purpose. That is satisfying in itself. Works for me.

What exactly do you mean by “focus on the present”?

Being “in the moment” at all times, not caring about 10 minutes ago or 2 years ahead? Or do you just dream short-distance and work towards goals for weeks instead of a lifetime?

My dreams are not for public consumption anymore. Over a decade ago, I made the mistake of responding to a stupid person’s chain-type email that included a list of 10 things I wanted to do in my life, typing them without much thought and firing off the response. As if I could not manage to work towards goals myself, and enjoy my own journey in life, the response has become the bain of my existence. The email inquiree with enlisted “help” from a group of idiots has tried to arrange my life and my life’s goals for me, generally downsizing the idea along the way. My “dreams” of a decade ago have certainly become one very long, hellish nightmare.

Happiness is found in the pursuit itself. When your life is hijacked, a quick, fiery ending is preferrable.

It is my plan to erase some of the things in my life, which do not mean anything to me and are to be considered a waste of time. Thus there should be some empty space for new things to grow and develop.

Dreams … my dreams are greyed out again, I can’t access the warmth and the sky. My place is lost so for now I would just like to find it again by rediscovering my days. Really, just what day I am on. The old system of crossing out the days in a nice zippered calendar binder worked for quite a while but long lost in the gloominess of it’s dark unenthusiastic cover and pages. It did not invite opening and when that accomplished, there was no way to figure what month never mind day I was to look for and cross out. Still, it was a good system if pursued and did give some comfort to know I knew what page I shared with everyone else. I have given it some thought in light of this passing challenge read in my rss feeder. What strange timing. An urge to live more passionately because of the loss of such by a best friend last week, her very life in fact. Perhaps that is my dream? I am very visual, drawn to certain colours and their combinations also. That’s it maybe, look into a similar type book but cover and pages designed itself or by me in my areas visual attraction, and much smaller. Something small to keep open beside my keyboard so to keep track and reminded of what day I am on and share with everyone else in the neighbourhood. There, figured out my steps and maybe even my dream. Thanks for listening.

I love this post!

Dreams are our inspiration, they fuel or passion! Without some sort of dreaming, life is lackluster, empty and hollow.

I dream to appreciate and value everything and every person I have - one thing I’ve learned in life insofar is to not take things/people for granted!!

If I could have it my way, I would be a successful independent film or theatre director. It would be so difficult, working my way ground-up.

But once again this dream only fuels my passion …
keep dreaming everyone!

This is one of my pet peeves.

What is meant here by “dreams” is really aspirations. I wish people would use the correct word. Words are power. Using the word dream for aspiration doesn’t acknowledge the value of dreaming. It hijacks this word in the service of a mechanized view of life. In my view, it’s sad that this word dream has so little meaning for many people that it has come to mean something else.

Dreams are an important part of of our nocturnal lives. In ancient times dreams were seen as the harbingers of events yet to come. Our dream life should be cultivated. I am lucky. My dream life is rich. When I was in art school I made a movie based on a dream. Dreams are the source of creativity for many of us. Dreams hone our intuition.

I know I haven’t addressed the aspirational intent of this post. But Zen is about no mind. It is about stillness, the present, not a greed for a future through Calvinistic effort.

I know there are a lot of young people writing here, and it is only natural for them to be future focused. There is a time (or developmental stage) to be goal driven, but there is a time to more process oriented too. I think being goal driven doesn’t value the necessary wrong turns and mistakes we make that are the real learning experiences for us.

But our dreams are discretely personal, fascinating, generative, and private.

Great comments, everyone! I’m really loving reading all of your dreams and planned actions.

@Christopher: I agree that words have power … they also have multiple meanings in many cases … if you look up the word “dream”, you’ll find something along the lines of “aspiration”:

a cherished desire; “his ambition is to own his own
business”

Gravatar

Christopher Says:

Leo,
Yes, language changes its meaning all the time. And the changes reflect the value placed on the words in question and the experience of the person that uses the language. When I talk about hi-jacking language, it is usually for some purpose of pusuasion. Realtors sell houses but call them homes. People borrow money to buy a house and call themselves home owners. I am very aware of the power of words to alter experience.

Thanks for pointing me to the dictionary. What a concept :)

I am amazed by your energy. Keep up the good work.

My dream is to find my own inner peace. I know that sounds somewhat pompous, and perhaps a little suburban-mother spiritualist, I truly think that I will be unable to help other people until I fully am at peace. This stems from my readings in Buddhism.

I’m still in high school, but I’m one of those idealists. I have just recently realized that I’ve had all these dreams, including the hope of finding inner peace. I also realized that I want to help other people and write. I have adopted the philosophy that until I get to college, the pursuit of my dreams should be controlled. This means meditating daily, learning about compassion, helping others as fits into my daily life, and writing occasionally. Once I reach college, it is my plan to actively pursue these dreams. Right now, I just feel there are factors beyond my control which inhibit things such as my constant schoolwork, rowing for 2 hours a day, and my parents(for example, I am a strong believer of simplicity, but my parents were repulsed by me giving away my previously-purchased videogames).

I am working full-time at a good company right now, as well as going to university. When I finish school I intent to pursue my dream, but until that happens I am staying focused on the intermediate steps needed to reach my dream and keeping my eyes open to everything that may guide and help me.

Christopher Says:

Oops! I meant persuasion. Sorry for the typo.

Jon,

Well done! My thinking is that a goal is no more than a direction that needs constant modification because there will always be (as you so wisely point out) factors beyond your control. There is a school of thought that believes that you can’t impose an ideal on any living being/system without causing violence.

So how to we change a habit? First, I believe we have to look at what is ending before we can replace it with something new. This is a radically different approach from simply following a recipe and trying to force behavior on ourselves. Kindness is to recognize that we are of the same kind. We need to know how to be kind to ourselves before we can be kind to others. Berating ourselves for mistakes is a self-inflicted violence. We may have the best intentions but at some level we will resist change unless we take the time to understand what is happening now (before we embark on a program of change).

You show wisdom beyond your years. Congratulations.

@Christopher…

You may be interested my dream site http://wedreaming.com

It started as a place to post my dreams, but I have been adding dream-related articles recently, so you may want to visit the archive pages to read actual dreams I’ve had. http://wedreaming.com/2007/07/

I do get creative inspiration from my dreams and I often learn quite a bit from them…if I make sure to pay attention;)

My dream is to make enough money to live on an island and be able to visit anywhere in the world anytime I want.

I also wouldn’t mind riding on sub-orbital Virgin space ways flight.

@Christopher: The word “dreams” has been used to mean “aspirations” for hundreds of years. Shakespeare, for example, loved that use of the word “dreams”. So do I! :)

Why use the word “dreams” in this case? Because it calls to mind so much more than goals or aspirations. It calls to mind the imagination, the power of creativity, and a connection with our subconscious mind that is not implied with “aspirations”.

When a word can do so much, I think it’s well used. :)

I dream I live with my wife in a tranquil part of the world near a lake and with a forest. I get up in the morning and tend to the chores of a small holder and in the afternoon I explore the forest or just relax near the lake or in our garden. In the evening we have friends round for dinner and we sing, dance and talk late into the night….

….then I am aware of being on the train, packed into the tin box on wheels with the rest of the familar strangers I always travel to my work with. I remember I am a wage slave in a city of millions of lonley people. I remember I sold my dream for a career, a mortguage on a house [that's proving difficult to sell], and the notion that success is somehow attached to material things.

I have owned many things I thought would make me feel good, they didn’t, now I am paying off the debt accumulated in purchasing the consumer paneceas. Then I remember its all good really, I have a dream relationship with my wife. I have a lot of good friends and I am healthy and alive.

I wish [as useful as dreaming], that I had followed my heart instead of my head when I was younger! I don’t know that I’d be any happier but I would at least have been true to myself.

Anyway I am happy to dream, I like to dream, the difference today is that I am as happy not to dream as I am to dream. Reality bites sometimes, dreaming soothes the pain. I am older non the wiser but I have realised being a living, breathing, feeling, happy [no matter what] being is the dream.

lol :)

This might sound lame, but I’m being honest. My dream is to become the person that I’ve always wanted to be. I know she’s in here. I just need to find the courage to let her out.

I am working on it, but it hasn’t been easy. I have a lot of old demons to conquer.

These questions inspired me to write on about it on my blog.

To even put these dreams down on paper er… computer, is one step towards them.

I’m living one of my dreams at the moment: I’m attempting to reduce my consumerist mindset and have a minimalist lifestyle. It’s easy in theory - but not in everyday practice :) For months now I managed not to buy anything unnecessary, in fact I got rid of a great deal of stuff I no longer needed.

I have a clear dream that I want to build a house one day and that I shall not be alone in that house. A family of my own, why is it that this dream eludes me? I’m working on this two dreams though I feel I don’t work hard enough.

As many have written here I also want to write a book and have it published. But this is a true dream: so many people want the same thing, so how do you stand out and get noticed, how do you prove that the book you have written is worth publishing?

My dream is to become a good stand-up comedian. I don’t want to be overly famous, just good enough to make a decent living at it. Like at least $50000 a year. I’ve won a contest in Myrtle Beach with over 60 participants and I am working on honing my craft. I’m developing a persona and also going for maximum laughter efficiency. I also wish to expand my blog and maybe, just maybe, start making money from it as well. I write posts maybe two times a week and they are a considerable length. I enjoy it. And I do receive amazing feedback. Wish me luck, everyone. I wish you all luck as well.

My dream is to become a family man who, loving his job, works for better Christian-Muslim dialog. There’s too much shouting and mistakes, and not enough respect to be had. Today, then, I’ll intentionally look to the people around me in a mediating and loving way, more than I already try to do. There’s just not enough promise of another day on this earth to put loving off any longer.

Thank you for this.

My dream is live by creation. I was told in high school by teachers and standardized testing that I should be and Architect or an Engineer so immediately I began creating art and writing in fear of my life turning into that of my construction based family.

Now I want to live my life doing freelance web and graphic design, writing, and making art with no bosses and all the perks and responsibilities or self-employment. It is a dream I have created over time and am pursuing in spite of my close family saying I need to set my priorities straight.

Who’s priorities? Mine? No. My priorities are right on track.

My dream for the moment is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in June - and to raise £10,000 for Alzheimers UK whilst doing it.

My action for today is to build some traffic towards my training blog, to raise the profile of my climb and hopefully raise some money!

Hence the comment :)

Well, I have a question for you… I have dreams and all that, like most people. But I am a beginner in Zen practice, and I have been reading about it… A basic Zen way is that there is no tomorrow, the only reality is now (as I commented on the resolutions post). Therefore, while I have always been a dreamer, I ask you how do dreams fit into the Zen way? How are they a Zen habit, if they are about tomorrow and not Now? I am not saying that they do not fit Zen, for as I said, I am merely a beginner in Zen practice and am not fit to judge. So tell me, please.
