Reader Poll: How Many Posts a Week is Ideal?

OK, quick poll time. I’m rethinking my posting schedule, and I’d like to hear from the people whose opinion counts most (that’s you) … how many times a week should I post?

What’s ideal for you?

Note: I’m only including options I’m willing to do … more than 5 is too many for me, and 1 post a week or fewer will not allow me to write as much as I want. :)

How many posts per week is ideal for you?

I prefer quality over quantity. Don’t feel the need to ‘produce’ for the sake of filling a quota. Not every day is an A+

I agree with rupert. While I’d *like * 5 a week I don’t feel it’s necessary, and I’d rather fewer if it meant you were able to spend more time on each to make them of a higher quality (so I voted ‘4′).

I try and post quality content as often as possible, but this means I usually don’t post as often as I’d like due to time contraints.

I certainly try and get at least 3 decent posts out a week, my philosophy really is quality over quantity!

Hi,

Just like to say thatI like the current set up, It’s great, and to have different topics on different days is why I log on and get my daily fix. Also its good that you don’t post on a weekend, its usually to busy for me to take time out to read and digest.

But surely if your true to the site, you should have time to blog anyway. but for me and I guess plenty of others, keep on bloggin’.

I tend to agree mostly with what has been said in the first few earliest comments.

Zen Habits is pretty much the only blog in which I can get something out of every single post. There are not a lot of other blogs out there that can match the quality of Leo’s content.

This said, recently I have noticed more and more guest posts, and some of Leo’s posts have been a little repetitive and lacking in their normal quality.

I kind of expected this to happen, as it has got to be hard for a single writer to consistently write so much quality content. Therefore, I voted that I would like five posts per week, because I still love reading what Leo writes, but as others have stated, if we miss a day because Leo was unable to put something quality together, that is no big deal. I’d happily wait it out to get the high quality production with a couple of rest days in between. It might even help readers with their information overload problems if they have fewer articles in their reader. :P

Leo, do whatever you need to do to keep on creating wonderful content. :)

I also prefer quality over quantity — especially taking that starting from 2 posts per week is already quite often to comprehend, think over, and put into action.

2-3 seems right: if there’s a “need” to blog, the 3rd can be used, but if there’s no real need, then 2 works. Locking yourself into any number seems unZen, you know?

I like the current setup, but if you are cutting back, then consider Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

The finance/family and happiness would be the (reluctantly) disposable topics.

Thanks for your hard work to date.

Trixi Says:

Ditto what Rupert said. And Brad, and Anna . . .

I will readily admit, however, that I selfishly voted for 5!

I respectfully suggest you consider that it doesn’t actually need to be a set number of posts per week. Perhaps you could instead set yourself a minimum (such as 2 or 3), but also write/post more when time and circumstances allow (and/or when desire, inspiration et al demand it).

Regardless of what you decide, there will still remain a treasure trove of your previous posts to visit ~ and re-visit. So fear not, you will certainly not leave your faithful readers high & dry if & when you cut back. Indeed, having additional time to re-visit and ponder (and apply) ideas from some of your previous posts, instead of always digesting a new one, might well be what is actually more needed by, and beneficial to, some of us.

I remember this poll from a year or so ago. The you asked us how much posts you should do each _day_. You said you were so full of ideas that you could do 5 a day. I guess those days are over now.

For me, two would be fine. The quality of your posts really has decline in the last few months. Better focus on two good ones that go for the big numbers again. You’re a creative person. Keep it that way.

You know, if you write them I’ll read them, but more than 3, for me, I don’t really get to think about them. So if there are 3 that are pithy and things I want to think about and 2 “lighter” ones, that would be paradise.

This question is both easy and hard — 5 posts is great but can impact quality and burn you out. I’m sure you have more to do than just this blog.

I think really only you can answer that question in the end. Try to be responsive to your readers desire to post more frequently, but I think you need to stay within yourself and what you are happy with. Churning out a lot of posts may leave you feeling unsatisfied with what you’re creating — which in the end will be reflected in the work.

I know for myself (blogging at 21st Century Citizen), if I go through times when it’s hard to balance blogging and my ‘real life’, I simply post less often.

If I’m posting to just go through the motions, then that’s unsatisfying — so I sometimes go several days (or more) between posts. Guest bloggers help since I have some that area great, but they really can’t be relied on for ongoing consistent production and quality - they have lives too…

Do what feels right. In the end, that’s what will have the greatest impact anyway.

Leo,

one post per day, including the invited writers, more than that is hard to follow, most of us work, and have a lot of other sites/blogs etc… to read… Zen Habits is a great read for week days, most of times make me think about what I’m doing and what I could do to be not just a better person for myself, but for my family, my colleagues, for the word, for the environment…

I check Zen Habits daily, though I almost never read the posts that have to do with finance or exercise. But I’d be willing to read as many posts about simplicity and organization as you’re willing to write. I’d say do as many posts as *you* are comfortable doing; as far as I’m concerned, guest posters, while nice, isn’t really the same as reading *your* blog.

Three gets my vote, but I could be satisfied with 2 good posts a week. More than 2 or 3 (particularly when reading 2 or 3 other blogs) gets way too heavy, and then the simplicity lessons get lost in the noise.

I would like to suggest that even if you post 5 times a week, why not tie all 5 to one theme - under your categories (routines)? That way we can get some real depth of research, response. Also, I think it is indicative of life - connecting the disparate dots.

Yes - I would challenge you that any theme could be explored under your 5 routines.

A list, a first pass gives a person a refreshing simple answer to various life challenges. Probing and approaching from a totally different vantage point may uncover more solutions (or more problems) - like life.

So far 5 a day works simply because they’re all high quality. But I also agree that it’s more about the content than about how often they get updated. If it’s great, post it. If you need to take a week off, we can just as easily wait!

This is a good example of where you shouldn’t listen to polls, because the majority of people have no clue (IMHO!).

You have to choose between publishing crappy blog-like fluff every weekday or publishing something excellent twice a week (such as ZTD quality articles).

I concur with the other commenters that suggest your quality is dropping.

Leo Says:

Thanks for all the great comments, guys! I really appreciate the input.

First point: I should have put this in the original post, because so many of you were under a misunderstanding, but for me, quality always comes first. Now, you might not always like every post I write, and might think the quality isn’t very good, but I do my best to write quality posts each time.

Basically, I wanted to find out if you would like me to stick with the current schedule of 5 quality posts a week, or if 2-3 would be better.

So what I’m hearing from the poll and comments here is this: 5 quality posts would be best, but if I’m busy or something you’d rather I write 2-3 quality posts than try to stick to 5 posts and write weaker posts. So that’s what I’ll do!

Someone mentioned the high number of guest posts: as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, those guest posts were meant to cover for me for a few weeks because of a family situation … that situation has calmed down a bit, and I hope to be writing more (with fewer guest posts) this coming week.

Someone else mentioned a similar poll I had a while back, when I mentioned I could write 5 posts a day … I think that was back in February, when I was still feeling out this blog … if you recall, back then, I was writing a lot of shorter posts, commenting on other sites, etc. I could still write 5 of *those* posts a day. But the readers at that time (it was a different crowd then, but still great people) said one a day would be quite enough … and I listened, only wrote one longer post a day, and dropped the short ones. It was good advice and I’m glad I asked.

I’m glad I asked now, too! I’ll try for 5 a week, but if I get behind, you’ll only see 3-4 quality posts from me a week … so be warned! :)

Greedy, little minx that I am, I chose “5.” BUT - I heartily agree with the practice of posting when YOU feel motivated to do so. I voted for five, but I’ve changed my mind after reading the comments. I especially liked what Maryrose said: that any more than three doesn’t give her enough time to think about them.

That’s an excellent point. We absorb so much information in a day from so many different sources, and some of the best stuff doesn’t get enough time in our own internal incubators because we barely have time to scan it all, let alone process it.

Anyway, you’re doing a great job. I know it’s not easy to keep pumping the stuff out day after day. How many posts would YOU like to publish each week?

Well, I like your tips, tricks and ideas but frankly it resides in my blog reader for a month before I read one. This’s not coz it’s bad, in contrast, it’s coz it’s very good and I always postpone reading it until I find a time where I can focus on reading and learn something new. This doesn’t come a lot those days with busy schedules even when I’m taking rest, my brain is put in off mode ;)

Anyhow, regarding your poll, I didn’t find a suitable number, my only advice is don’t care about numbers. I know you like to be organized and to schedule your writing habits but for me writing is free time that I can’t schedule and I can’t imagine how writers force themselves to write everyday in blogs and newsletter even they are empty and not enjoying it!!!

Write when you want to write, when you enjoy to share. This’s all what about ZEN, isn’t it?

I want to read what you post…if you want to post twice a day and feel moved to, then post twice a day. Or post once a day, or take a week off, or have some guest posts. Every post I’ve seen wheter you did it or your guests did it was quality.

I just started reading your blog, but I look forward to it more than anything else I’m reading on the internet right now and I do appreciate your time and your perspective…so might I suggest doing what works for you. Start with a guidleline, but keep is simple and do what feels right for you. I guess that’s what I got from your blog one day when I was reading it…simplifying…it seems simple to do what you are led to do in your heart (which by the way is where I think you are writing from!)

However, the Muse, must be fed and sometimes, The Muse just doesn’t co-operate, then you just have to bow to the powers that be. I understand its a blistering pace.

I know I am always thinking what my next post is and where the material will come from and where am I going to be and will I get to my computer in time to hit my own self imposed deadlines.

But it is the fun of it all as well.

The decision will become difficult for you. There are really good comments above. From my point of view, another possibility would be to replace the gaps with older posts. They’re still excellent and I’m sure many of your new readers haven’t read them yet. The one’s who have already read a particular older post could easily skip it. Like me there are may be other one’s who have simply forgotten some posts or particular contents of it. Therefore, it would serve as a reminder and no one is forced to lose his or her routine. It’s just a suggestion, so think about it.

I would put a minimum of two quality posts per week with a maximum of five quality posts. Any less is too sporadic, any more would be information overload.

The times I look for good posts are:
- Monday mornings to kick start my week
- Wednesday morning to get through the week
- Friday afternoon to get ready for the weekend

There also comes a point where you need to stop posting and do something, so you have something good to post the next time.

The idea behind ZenHabits is to change individuals for the better, not overwhelm them. Most times I only focus on changing 1-2 things at a time, as you’ve suggested. If I want/need to read more you have many previous posts that I haven’t implemented in my life.

I agree with ak, 3 is great, with the occasional extra post on something you want to address. We, as readers, don’t want posting to be a chore and quality over quantity seems to be a theme in comments.

I think if you are feeling stressed about the number of posts you are writing, or feel you need and/or want to write - meditate. You’ll have your answer; you’ll know.

It’s thoughtful to ask your readers how many posts they think is optimum, but this is obviously more about you - you do the work. Plus it’s unlikely you’ll get the answer you are looking for.

I’m thinking also that writing/posting when you are stressed could affect the quality of your posts and then, because you obviously care and are conscientious about content, you would be more stressed and then …

One question - do you need a schedule written in stone?

So many great comments here … I wish I could respond to all of them!

Quality over quantity … I definitely hear that. :)

@Connie: No, I don’t need a schedule written in stone, but it does help me … I like a little structure to my work week, so if I know I’m going to write 5 articles, I can budget my time accordingly.

Five articles a week, even if they’re my best quality articles (which I try for every week), is not too much work for me or too stressful. It’s just that I’ve noticed some other blogs that do as well as I do, but only post 2-3 times a week … and their readers seem to actually prefer that. If you guys preferred 2-3 per week, instead of 5, I would want to give you that. But I’m hearing that 5 isn’t too much … although 3 would be OK if I didn’t have time to write 5 quality posts.

After reading the comments and seeing the poll, let’s just say this:

1. I’m going to keep the schedule pretty much the same, for now.

2. If I get pressed for time, rather than trying to stick to the schedule, I’ll cut back on the posts in any given week. Quality is more important than keeping the schedule.

3. I will probably continue to run guest posts from other bloggers to supplement my writing — but not as much as I have the last few weeks. I usually shoot for 1 guest post per week, and I think that’s a good amount … it gives you guys a good mix of content without taking away from my writing. Note: I already have a lot of guest posts submitted, so please don’t write to me about submitting one. I’m overloaded with them as it is. :)

4. I reserve the right to deviate from the schedule, to post extra stuff if I feel like it, and so on. I don’t like to lock myself in to one set schedule … if I feel like writing about something else, gosh darn it, I’m gonna! :)

I really appreciate all the encouragement and honest feedback, my friends. Thanks for caring enough to vote and leave comments. You guys are the best.

One thing that might be interesting, aside from all the other good suggestions people have made, is some kind of “The story so far…” ongoing post. I’m thinking of something where you (or someone) commit to a particular goal, and give us weekly updates on how it’s going. A bit like the 100-thing challenge, probably. That would be a series that would:
a) give us a window into how you do things;
b) provide continuity and flow;
c) maybe inspire some of us to go along with you; and
d) give you a fairly easy post for one day a week ;-).

I voted for 5 - it’s wonderful to prepare for work every morning by reading a zen habits post. I especially like the different posts for different days schedule.

On the other hand, I’m with everyone else on quality over quantity. Since it sounds like getting guest posts is not a problem, my ideal would be that if you’re feeling time pressure or generally unable to put a post together, to substitute with a guest post so that I can still start my day off on the right Zen foot. :)

Firstly….well done for providing a very professional site.

I voted 2 per week. I’d love more but to be honest I’d not have time to read them.

The most important thing is the quality and also to read a well written article - that takes time and to be honest even two per week would be difficult to sustain.

Keep up the great work.

Leo,
I’m a black belt instructor in my off hours and run a digital marketing company during the day. I really enjoy reading your posts… what about considering 3 days a week? (Mon, Wed & Fri). We recently started a blog called http://www.greenproductoftheday.com and it became evident to my business partner that daily blogging is a daunting task, so I completely appreciate where you are coming from.

Thanks for the great blog. I’ll continue to digg your articles and let my friends know about your site.

Best regards,

Jim

Hmm, the vote button doesn’t seem to work. Maybe it’s just me?

I’m completely fine with five . . . it’s a nice little daily reward to motivate me each weekday!

“Less is more” isn’t the new motto ?

What about 2 posts a week plus a vintage past post ?
