Considering that just about everything begins as an idea, how we can generate more of them is important.
As an artist (painter) I sometimes wonder, “what next?” If I’m thinking I’ve run out of subjects to paint, I remind myself to look in at what’s right in front of me and what is at my feet at that moment.
We’re always looking for the grand vistas and the major themes, but people relate most to small everyday things. I think that pertains to writing as well as it does to painting.
Cheers,
John

Hi Leo,
I also use a lot of the techniques you use and describe.
I never leave home without a notebook and a pen. I read countless magazines and websites every week and whenever I see a story on television that I can twist for my site…I’m all over it.
I not only have word documents to track ideas, but I also have certain files on an excel spread sheet and I keep adding to the list on a regular base.
In my filling cabinet, I also have files by topic and I insert any article I see elsewhere that I could get inspired by to write a post or perhaps it can be something I completely disagree with.
I do the same for my podcasts, I’m constantly planning and stocking ideas well before I need to use them. In fact, I just completed an update before reading your site.
I also strongly believe in exercise because it takes me away from my work and allows me to see it from a different angle. I often find solutions to problems or great headlines for stories. It clears my head and allows great new ideas to sprout.
I think that content planning is something you do on a daily base…that way you never run out of “amazing ideas”.

These are great ideas. I find that carrying a notebook really does help. When you’re caught without anything to write your ideas on, telling yourself you won’t forget it is not really true. Like you, I’ve lost many a good concept by telling myself that and refusing to carry a notepad with me.

I like the part about learning from mistakes. It strikes me that you could set up several new websites about people sharing stories about their mistakes, and subsequent growth…

Sarah,
That’s BRILLIANT! Simply brilliant.
It would be great to read about others mistake and share our own.
Leo, correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s a way of growing.

One thing that really works for me is to stop trying. It’s really hard to be creative when you’re sitting at your desk telling yourself to be creative! What really helped while I was writing my book last year were long showers and walks in the park. When you’re not trying to churn out content, it somehow manages to come out anyway. Ironic…
