I’m usually asleep before takeoff on planes even sitting upright and during most of the flight so a pillow and slippers help me but probably not you.

I can’t usually do laundry every night so a couple of extra undies and socks help me until I can wash or better yet buy a set from the local market. I like to shop as I travel.

Here’s my list (everything packed in zip lock bags).
sleep pants/shirt, single LED light (for middle of the night)
two pairs of underwear/socks
one casual pant; one s/s polo, one l/s pullover
comfort pack: water and snacks; book, neck pillow, slippers
appearance pack: comb/hair gel, toothbrush/paste, shaver/trimmer
med pack: meds, Tums, Advil, cough drops, face mask, moleskin/band aids
ID pack: passport (extra pages size) and visas and pen, tickets and travel member cards, driver’s license and rental cards, credit cards
E pack: iPod Touch (with pdf’s of all my travel docs), mobile phone and charger (depending on country: one for U.S., one for Australia, one for Japan)

My wife has her one plus one set for everything and really hated giving up her Swiss Army knife for air travel.

We dress city casual. That’s slacks, blazer, walking shoes for me and about the same for my wife. We’ll do three international trips a year and travel around sightseeing in the U.S. when we can.

Don’t plan on any of the tips you read unless you practice them several times first where you live before the trip. Take your empty bags shopping with you for durability practice. On three day weekends, live out of your bags for practicality practice.

When we travel, we are usually away from home for up to 6 months at a time.

Our first trip was what the “travel advisors” all told us we “should” to take for the time we would be away. 1 large and one smaller suitcase each + carry on. NEVER AGAIN he cried.

When we arrived back home, we sat down and discussed what we really needed to take next time.

The result was a list that was more than 30 items long. We though about what we use at home. We thought about our footprint on the world.

Now our list, is more than 80+ items, it all fits in one small suitcase (check in) each. But it includes all our worldly clothes, toiletries, first aid and medicines (Both of us are over 60), repair kits, cameras, mp3s etc. All we leave at home is our furniture, some bedding and a computer.

We are travellers in our lives. We have travelled on every continent except Antarctica. We visit with friends new and old all over the world. We camp on the side of the road, sleep in hostels, eat with the locals etc.

The biggest compliment on my travelling was given to me by the equivalent of the chief inspector of police in a town in Turkey. A bus load of travellers drove past where we were eating. He turned to me and said ” they are not like you. they do not know the price of bread. They come here, hire a interpreter and say, show me Turkey. They look out the window and see Turkey, but they never know the price of bread.
