The Simple Life
- Quiet mornings.
- Sing-a-long songs with my toddlers in the car.
- Sunset and a beer with my wife.
- Runner’s high on a long run.
- Cuddling up and watching a DVD with the wife and kids.
- Walking outside with my son after it rains.
- My “life” talks with my eldest daughter in the car.
- Writing a post for 50,000 people, in my pajamas.
- Feeling sick and lying in bed all day without having to call my boss.
- Showing my 2-year-old the clear starry sky.
- Cheering my kids on in their soccer games.
- Time alone with a good book.
- Freshly brewed coffee.
- My hot veggie soup on a cold day.
- Writing before the sun rises.
- Fresh, cold berries.
- A long conversation with a friend.
- Succumbing to a mid-afternoon nap.
- Playing kickball in the yard with my kids.
- The feeling of satisfaction after a workout.
- Waking up to a clean, uncluttered living room.
- Laughing at my 4-year-old son’s wacky sense of humor.
- Screaming my head off when my son scores a goal.
- Collapsing after finishing a marathon, exhausted but in love with life.
- Spending time with my mom and sisters on a Saturday afternoon, baking sweets.
- Letting a warm chocolate chip cookie melt in my mouth with my eyes closed.
- A long hot shower.
- Walking with the sand between my toes as the sun goes down.
- Listening to the sound of waves lapping a white sand beach.
- A hug when I need it.
- Dew on the grass in the morning.
Discuss.

p.s. sorry for my absence (and for this short post) but I’ve been under the weather the past couple of days. Will be back in full force soon!

Leo, I have a rekindled appreciation of you and your message after seeing the Dalai Lama today at my school, the University of Washington. His vitality, optimism, and message were beyond inspiring. As he was speaking, I thought of your blog numerous times and how you apply the principles of which he was speaking to everyday life and modern technology. Thanks!

Beautiful post. Glad to know that there are more people in this world that truly appreciate and savor these moments. Here are a few more:
Watching my son sleep when he was four years old and hoping he would not grow up too fast.
Laughing with my husband until our sides hurt.
Fresh baked cookies.
My daughter’s beautiful smile that seems to light up an entire room.
And my most recent moment of “zen”:
I was grumbling because I had to get up extra early on a Sunday morning to take my daughter to her riding lesson. The sun was just coming up and peeking through the trees, filling the fields that we drove by with sunlight. There was a slight fog and horses were grazing in the pastures. Yes, there was a red barn and everything. It was ethereal, and I wasn’t grumbling anymore. I was thankful. Get down on my knees thankful.

–At the end of a long run on a cold day, when the freezing blast of wind feels like a refreshing breeze
–Signs of spring: the first robin, the first wild coltsfoot flower, “the swallows are back!”
–Rushing, foaming water after a heavy rain
–When someone says something unexpectedly funny and everyone laughs–especially if I said it :*)
–The feel of comfortable pillows, sheets and blankets after a tiring day
–Good, funny, or exciting dreams (REM sleep, not daydreams, although those are great too!)
–Realizing “this is a GREAT book” after one chapter and seeing there are many more to come!
–Using just the right tool (even a plain screwdriver when it exactly fits the screw)

Hadn’t noticed you were missing in action Leo - hope you’re taking some good drugs and feeling better soon.
How’s your book coming along?
Have a good day!

I agree one of the high points in my life was showing my infant daughter everything for the first time-fist time I held her up to touch a leaf, the first time she heard a really awesome thunderstorm-in my arms. She’s a “worldly” 7 now….And runners high-that is deep meditation in itself

Leo, I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your blog. I’ve been going through a difficult time lately and find it soothing to read your posts and try to put some of the ideas into practice.
Get better soon!

Get feeling better soon - but enjoy the downtime.
This is a wonderful list, and something we all should do now and then. I feel strongly that people would be so much happier if they would stop and think of all the little things that make them happy and appreciate each one of them.
I have to agree with so many of the wonderful things people have listed here. And add…
sleeping under the stars - this wonderful ever changing New Mexico sky I never get enough of
watching a horse gallop and dance and play across the pasture, full of the joy of life
seeing the Cottontop Quail run across the yard - they always make me smile and laugh.
the “finding a treasure” sort of joy I get when I gather the eggs my chickens have laid.
eating those eggs!
a surprise wildlife sighting - a pronghorn dashing through the yard in the morning, the badger trundling across a field, a glimpse of a desert fox beside the road at night.

It is the simple things in life that make life so grand! I am learning more to slow down and not to take these things for granted. Your blog has helped me with this….
Great list and as always so inspiring. Hope you start feeling better soon!

After my mom’s prolonged battle with cancer and subsequent passing, I learned how to appreciate the simple things…like a full moon, a warm hello from a stranger, running in the evening with the wind rustling in the trees….

What you wrote just sent chills down my spine. I’ve been looking for some kind of inspiration, in the search of happiness and uncluttering my life with material things that just don’t matter. I’m excited to start reading your blog.

Leo, your site has been an inspiration to me since I landed here. Not sure if I ever left a comment before but here is one for you. I love your articles and it just fits.
I think I will build a list and post one as well, but will not be near as long as yours. Thanks for the privilege of posting…

I had a hard work day today. 15 hours.
When i came home, i got a sweet kiss from my wife, looked at my two kids sleeping in one bed, my son in the arms of his older sister, then i got myself a cold bottle of beer out of the fridge and read your post. Now i am sitting here smiling.
What a great evening!

My list:
Watching sheer curtains blow in the breeze.
Putting on a sweatshirt fresh out of the dryer.
Homemade lemonade with ice.
The scent of rain just before it arrives or just after it has ended.
A small ice cream cone from a road-side stand–any flavor
The crackling of fire.
