Awesome job! You had a very similar first experience to mine and after riding my 17 miles on a mountain bike I swore I'd never do that again, so I went out and bought a road bike.
Like you, I'm a runner by nature, but I enjoy all 3 legs tremendously. With a little improvement in the bike and swim, I am sure times will improve drastically.

Do you have any plans for a 2nd Tri in the near future?

Congrats on your first Triathlon. You did great on the running segment!
Sounds like you need to reward yourself with a new bike ; )

By the way, you are smart to buy a used bike first. Once you get the hang of it and learn to handle the bike you can upgrade. I just recommend to buy a bike that fits you properly and that is comfortable. It will also make a difference to have your bike fitted. I also recommend a road bike versus a tri bike as a road bike will be more versatile, You can then add aero bars to the road bike. A tri bike is hard to handle especially if you don't have experience on the road bike.

I congratulate you on your first triathlon. It's amazing what we are physically & mentally capable of doing when we set our mind to it. I think it's great when people go out there and just do it. Riding a mountain bike is tough!! Competing is a wonderful feeling especially as you improve your time & performance. I completed my first Ironman back in June in 13.5 hours something I never thought I would do - but most of it was mental (and of course sticking to my training plan). This past April I ran my personal record marathon at the Boston marathon. Running the oldest marathon was a dream of mine for about 10 years. It's amazing that now in my 30s I'm in the best shape in my life.I am blessed that I have the ability to do it and that I can put my body through this and my mind. I congratulate you again!! Train hard! I'm inspired!

I visit Zen Habits every once in awhile and just happened to open it up today. I am bewildered that I found this page.

In March I was in the middle of training for my first marathon. I was on mile 17 of my program when I popped my knee horsing around with friends. The doctors diagnosis was a torn ACL. I got set up with a brace, scheduled an MRI, and it seemed surgery was imminent. The worst part of it all was that I was told I would not be able to run on it for at least 8 months.

Two weeks later my MRI results were in and I met with my doctor. He told me the glorious news that my ACL was intact but I really tweaked... along with my meniscus strained and a few bone bruises. He said I could start running a week or so later.

It's been about a month now and I've taken it slow since then. I have lost so much of my endurance and stamina that I had gained preparing for the 26.2. Recently, a spot opened up in a local sprint triathlon and I was able to secure the position. I have had roughly two weeks to train for it so far and another thirteen days from today until the event. I am starting to get my endurance back little by little but I am struggling. I am still having some discomfort in my knee and brick training makes it more noticeable. Just this morning I was starting to feel like putting off the tri and aiming for another event.

Having said that, reading this entry really gave me back some of my spirit. I have a fifty minute run tonight and I now think I have the energy to complete it.

Congrats Leo and thanks to everyone for the comments.

Hey everyone! READ THIS!!

Mike OD from the fitness spotlight poses as a fitness expert but he is not. Google "Mike ODonnell" +triathlon

He has never done a triathlon but he pretends he has done many and gives out advice.

Congrats on your achievement. I have been swimming up to twice a week for the last few months and can easily do 1km without stopping now. Keep going with it, it's a great form of exercise and you can soon get better if you remember the basics and pace things.
