If it's just an affiliate link, then I take back what I said earlier.

What matters is what led up to the blog post. If the author (or any other financial interest) of a work comes to you and says promote this and you'll get a cut, then that needs to be disclosed, even if you actually like the work.

But if you're just promoting something you like, and using an affiliate system to take a cut, then that's as old as Amazon (so to speak).

@Zeke: You're right, it's the intent that matters, and yes ZH's history speaks to Leo's honesty, and I'm sure that he's not trying to swindle anybody.

My guess: The commenters and I are less upset about the book advert in and of itself, just venting that after weeks of sparse posting, Leo comes to us with a book review littered with "Buy now!" links for an overpriced ebook.

Leo is not in any way obligated to post regularly. Regular readers are just worried about the site's future.

The problem is that a blog's chronological format creates an expectation for regular new content. In fact, ZH has so much good information in its archives that at this point Leo could stop posting all together, and 99% of the time we'd find the information we're looking for (or something that works) in the archives, if we looked.

What'd be great is if there was a ZH wiki that had all of the previous material in it. No one cares when the last time a wiki was updated as long as there's useful information there.

When people see "abandoned" blogs they tend to ignore them, even if the blog is chock-full of information.

Otherwise, Leo, if you need a break, just take it! Holding us at bay with guest posts is only holding us away. Think about a wiki, then post as your time permits for really juicy information that you want to share.

Just some thoughts, be happy!

There's a lot of crying over advertisement. It really comes down to whether you're endorsing this book because you get a cut or whether you get a cut because you're endorsing this book (and the order doesn't really matter, much). The intent is what matters and the only way you make that intent clear is through the history of your blog.

I'm not a regular reader but from what I do read, it looks as though you're not trying to screw anyone out of their money! Your endorsement is good enough for me. Unfortunately, the book is far too expensive for a self-published e-book! Others have said it, but for $10 I might have purchased it out of curiosity. As it is, I think I already learn this way and it's not at all worth my $20 to find out for sure!

I feel the sentiment of the other readers, in that I'm more often skipping ZH posts in my feed reader. Seems that you can only tell people how to be productive so many ways before you run out of material.

The trick is getting people to look through the wealth of information already available on the site, since I'm guessing at this point anything you could want to accomplish in your life has already been covered (or at least enough general information exists for you to get it done.)

Also, if you don't want to shell out the cash, try reading Young's free ebook on holistic learning: http://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/books/

I imagine it's got a lot of cross-over material.

Finally, it's only in proper form for full disclosure Leo, if you're promoting a product that's fine, but if you're making money on promoting it you need to tell us.

Take a cue from other sites, when you have a connection with some external site/post/product, just tell us, and let us judge if any bias is present. I'm glad you're updated the post.

Otherwise, congrats on the wedding and be happy!
