Thank you for the article! I am very much able to relate to it! I have a job that most people would probably consider pretty bad: typing numbers into a computer for a cheque processing company. So it's basically just a bunch of images of cheques popping up one after the other and I type the amounts in. I do this for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Fortunately, we are allowed to listen to music while we do this job and that's where my experience comes in. Basically what has happened is I've somehow managed to turn the experience of typing into something better referred to as dancing. I can honestly say that I enjoy doing my job. It's almost like a recreational activity, yet on the surface it is absolutely mind-numbing. Of course, if the typing is interrupted by something like a meeting, the rhythm is also interrupted - but as time goes on, even THAT starts to become it's own rhythm. I think once you really get into the rhythm of any one activity like that for a long period of time, you eventually start to realize that everything you do has a rhythm to it. And then eventually, instead of walking, running or stumbling through your life, you just start dancing. :D

I just don't think any line of work where you work for someone else is really all that "enjoyable" to the point where you can take advantage of flow. After awhile, any job gets boring and repetitive, no matter how difficult it is.

I use flow as you call it in my workouts; once I put my headphones on in the gym I simply tune out everything that’s going on in the outside world, and around me.

There is an inner peace that comes over me and my focus is totally on the task at hand.

Time passes so fast that it’s almost hard to believe that I just moved 70,000 pounds in under an hour.

This is my time to relax and release all of what’s happening in my life. When I leave the gym im ready to tackle any project that comes my way with ease.

[...] Lose yourself in your work. Once you’ve found work you love, the key is to lose yourself in it … clear away all distractions, find an interesting and challenging task, and just pour all your energy and focus into that task. With practice, you’ll forget about the outside world. There are few work-related joys that equal this feeling. Read more. [...]
