As for which series to choose after Harry Potter: My pick would be the Artemis Fowl series. I won't TRY to describe it, since it's just so much genius.

And don't think I'm recommending it because both books' names are the same as the main characters'!

Hi Leo, This is my first time commenting on your blog... I just wanted to share the lists I have made of children's books many are New Zealand Authors but some you should be able to find locally. If you haven't discovered Shaun Tan yet he would be my number 1 suggestion. Anyway here's my list...
http://seeshareremember.blogspot.com/search/label/childrens%20books

Thank you so much for all your work!

I'd recommend Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. It starts with "The Eye of the World". It's fantasy, but definitely not children's books. It's an epic story (12 books, the last one coming out next year) in a very immersive world. Don't worry about the volume, you'll know if you love it at the first half of the first book. Read at least that far (I recommend reading the first book to the end), before you decide.

Here is the first book :

And the series :

I second/third/fourth the rec for the His Dark Materials books by Pullman. They are really great books - fun but meaningful as well. I really love them.

You could also try the Mysterious Benedict Society books by Trenton Lee Stewart (2 out now, another on the way I think) and the Evil Genius books by Catherine Jinks (3 out now, 1 more on the way) - both series are really enjoyable.

For young kids I like Janet and Allan Ahlberg's books, some poetry and some novels. My favourite is Burglar Bill, (he does give up his life of crime in the end). I also like The Jolly Postman.

I am lucky enough to have a mother who read to me all the time as a child and loved doing it, we practically lived in the library. I know that if I asked her today she'd let me snuggle up to her while she reads to me (I'm 30 now).

There have been lots of great suggestions made for books to read, to which I wish to add some older books I enjoyed as a child, a million tears ago.

The Half-Magic series by Edward Eager (four sibling share magical adventures with unexpected outcomes)
Calling on Dragon's Series by Patricia Wrede (wonderful strong female lead, lots of magic and GREAT humour)
The Encyclopedia Brown series by Donald J. Sobol (boy detective solves mysteries with just enough clues for kids to join in on the sleuthing)
Voyages to the mushroom Planet by Eleanor Cameron (two boys and a chicken travel to another planet and use their wits to help save the mushroom people)

Hi Leo

I'd recommend anything by Ursula Leguin. Her Catwings series is suitable for early chapter book readers and the Earthsea and Annals of the Western shore series are excellent for young adults. At 53 years old, I read everything Leguin writes with great pleasure. Her writing is deeply thoughtful and written with simplicity and eloquence.

Here's some links:

I think you and your kids are fortunate to enjoy reading together.
