Hi guys … I’m excited to let you know about a project I’ve helped launch along with other bloggers (led by Mark Hayward of Mytropicalescape.com):
It’s called Train For Humanity: Racing to Make a Difference. Please check it out!
Train For Humanity is a new site we’ve created to allow endurance athletes (like myself) use their training to help raise money for humanitarian causes. So in this first phase, Mark, Dan Clements and I will be training for marathons and triathlons later this year … and you can sponsor us by making a donation that will go directly to the Darfur Peace & Development Organization … helping to bring peace to one of the greatest humanitarian crises in the world. The Darfur Peace and Development Organization is “dedicated to a peaceful Darfur that is justly governed and developed in a sustainable manner.”
How can you help?
You can support Train For Humanity by sponsoring me in my training for the Honolulu Marathon (to be held on Dec. 14).
I’ve just started my training and hope to have my best marathon ever, with a goal of coming in under 4 hours (finished my last marathon in March in 4:14). If you sponsor me, not only are you helping a great cause, but you’ll be giving me motivation to train. It’s a win for everyone.
You can also sponsor the other two bloggers who are training: Mark Hayward and Dan Clements.
Or, you can help spread the word. Here’s how.
Train For Humanity — Bigger Vision
Train for Humanity is just in its first phase, with the three of us volunteering as guinea pigs. But we plan to open the site up to a larger group of athletes, so that if you plan to train for an endurance event such as a marathon or triathlon, you can sign up for TFH and have your own sponsor page. This way athletes can do a good thing as they train, and get some motivation in return.
We also plan to broaden the beneficiaries to a larger number of humanitarian organizations.
Please note that we are a non-profit organization, and we will get none of the money donated. It will all go directly to the humanitarian organizations.
So I hope you’ll support our cause! Sponsor me or help spread the word!

Hi guys … just wanted to let you know that I’m going to bed right now and won’t be around to answer questions or respond to concerns (it’s almost midnight for me). But I’ll be back in the morning (afternoon/evening for many of you) to address those questions/concerns.
Thanks in advance for your kind support!

WOW LEO,
This sounds like a pretty cool cause. What exactly does the money go to? It’s cool that you can take what you love to do and use to to make the world a better place.
That is why I want to earn money on my entrepreneurs blog. I want to use the money I earn to both help those in need and I also want to teach people how to earn more money so they can donate more money to charities like you are doing.
Great post and sounds really cool.
I am really interested to start running as I don’t want to just be a fat lard in front of the computer all day, which I am not yet. But I want to have a healthy lifestyle

Just a question leo (which you can answer when you wake up). Do you give much of the money you earn from ZenHabits away?
At the moment I am in the sowing season of my blog SmarterWealth but I spend more than I earn usually so I don’t give from it YET. Just wondering if you give money from your blog?

Sounds like a great way to increase awareness and raise funds for humanitarian causes! Good luck on your training!

Forgive me if this is a weird idea. Maybe what I felt at school, or the post I have just written but…
what about including fat people as runners in this project?
(please consider this just a weird “brainstorming” idea)

Good idea!
Eventually you might want to check out or synchronize it with the Nike+ Human Race approach?
Be it as a receiving organization, the training progress etc.

Outstanding, Leo! I am a distance runner myself and have avoided certain race events particularly because they didn’t directly support a charity. You just cracked the race world open! For me, anyway. Congratulations on an excellent projects and a hearty thank you.

@ Miguel - This could possibly be something they do in the future. But I think this is more for ‘distance’ runners more than it is for people running to lose weight.
Good brainstorming idea though

Oh and leo I think this is an awesome idea because you are not limited to one race in one location. Literally everyone all over the world can get involved.

Thank you all for your encouragement! It really means a lot.
Btw, it’s 4 a.m. and I’m going out soon for an 8-mile run. :)
To answer a couple questions really quickly:
1. @Ryan: The money goes to the Darfur Peace & Development Organization … see link in the post.
2. @Ryan: I do give away some of the money I earn from Zen Habits, but not as much as I’d like. I hope to do more in the future. I’ve actually given more to help out smaller bloggers succeed than charities.
3. @Miguel … I’m not sure where you’re going with that idea. People of all sizes will be welcome to participate!
4. @Marco: I’ll definitely look into the Nike initiative … thanks!
