Blog Action Day Reminder, Plus the Little Book of Productivity

Just wanted to remind everyone who is participating in Blog Action Day that it’s tomorrow (Oct. 15) … or actually today for anyone in my part of the globe. Don’t forget to write your Blog Action Day post!

For those who are unaware, Blog Action Day is one day a year (Oct. 15) when thousands of bloggers talk about one topic. Last year it was the environment, and this year it’s poverty. One day a year when bloggers unite to change the conversation. It’s a project started by Collis and Cyan Ta’eed, myself and a few other great people.

If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late — join in the action and make a difference!

Looks like a really cool book, and blog action day is an interesting idea but I am frustrated that there is no direct call to action to help end poverty. I read all these blogs talking about poverty but feel helpless because none tell me what I can do.
Next year when my young entrepreneurs blog is bigger I will be involved in blog action day and I will include a specific call to action for my readers.
Thanks for the post

Thanks for the recommendation for the book. Sounds right up my alley by the title. I may check it out soon when I have a bit of free time.

I don’t think I’ll get a post done on poverty since its way off topic for me but looking forward to seeing other’s on the subject as it is very dear to me.

Ryan, great point. Check out:
http://site.blogactionday.org/poverty/fight-poverty/
http://blogactionday.org/live_updates/fundraising

That’s a start. We’ve seen dozens of great examples already of people doing community outreach and poverty relief efforts of various kinds.

Thanks Leo for all your help - and for co-founding this event in the first place! :)

I am participating in the BAD08, but being from a country where poverty is a big problem, I think it needs a continuous focus on eradicating poverty, not just once in a year programs. So I would encourage every blogger who participated in BAD08, to keep it going and not forget about it.

The Art of Manliness Man Cookbook looks more sophisticated than I expected. I thought it was going to be about pizza and pop-tarts.

Blog Action Day is a great concept!
Writing a blog tends to make me very selfish and needy, I’m always looking for ways other websites and blogs can help me. This is a great way to step away from that mindset and write something that matters.
I’m going to write about Fuel Poverty and ways to tackle it. Ryan, think global and act local- maybe you could write a piece on a local charity or social enterprise and the work they do in your neighborhood to alleviate poverty. Interview/ chat with someone struggling with poverty. I wish I had the guts to go have a chat with the homeless guy down my street, but I’m not sure I do.

It’s great that you’re getting the word out to your wide readership.

For Ryan who commented above, in my contribution, I focused on providing clean water and basic sanitation.

There are actually many great actions you can take and links are easy to find.

Leo,
Blog Action Day is a wonderful concept. Thank you!
Thinking about poverty and talking/reading about it today has been really powerful. I urge everyone to participate …it is an extremely rewarding experience - learning about the problems of the world is the first step towards doing something about it.
I have blogged about “Childhood Poverty” at http://www.thinkmaya.com. I saw so much poverty amongst kids my age while growing up in India. I hope we all do our bit in any way we can.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! I’m grateful for everyone who participated so far. For those who didn’t make it on the 15th, it’s not too late! You can still blog about poverty after the 15th (just do it asap) and be a part of this — we won’t come hunting you down. :)

I could not find the Man Cookbook; it returned 404 Not Found. The main page for the url is still there, but it’s blank. Google offers 8 subsidiary pages for the artofmanliness url; every single one is 404 Not Found. I wonder what happened. I hope your friend is okay.

@Helen C: The Art of Manliness server just crashed today. I think that’s the price you pay for popularity sometimes. It should be up shortly — please check again soon!

If you liked “About a Boy”, you should check out “The Martian Child” by David Gerrold. Another book that’s been made into a formulaic movie, the novel is much better and tells the mostly-true story of a single author who adopts a high-risk child who thinks he’s a Martian. Many of Gerrold’s experiences resonated with those of a family member of mine who also has adopted a high-risk child.
