When I was training for my first Ironman Triathlon my least favorite workout was running in the snow and rain. I read an article about just going out for 5 minutes. Once I was out there I had the opportunity to choose more or go back inside. It worked great and got me out there in any weather and I ran longer 99% of the time.

Habits are hard to break and make, a little motivation and desire goes a long way. If you are trying to quit smoking then breaking the physical habit is hard, the mental habits are even harder.

Great article on habits and I know it will help many break those bad habits and start new good habits.
Cheers

[...] I need to drop my ex-boyfriend, SD, like a bad habit. And now. But, after more than three intense years with this guy, I don’t think thirty days is going to do it… enter “Half Habits”, this cool little Zen based theory stating: “Half-Habits: Rather than aim to form a new habit fully, aim to make progress in the direction of the new habit. You will gradually re-adjust, and the approach is much more natural than expecting to form a new habit with a single leap.” ~ZenHabits [...]

@Mumbai: While planning can sometimes get in the way of getting things done, clarity is essential to better living. This is what planning aims to accomplish: managing life's complexity and clarifying one's thoughts, so that it is easier to carry out the tasks required.

But beginning with action helps you have a better understanding of the experiences you want to have. We sometimes feel anxious about a certain experience simply because we don't know what it will be like. :)

@Aeroporika Eisitiria: I've never smoked in my life, so I don't know what it's like to quit. Having said that, there are common patterns of human behavior that are applicable to all habits. For example, if we enjoy a given habit, we will be reluctant to give it up. To actually say: "I must STOP smoking," will make you put off quitting because you're still attached to the habit.

@Hugh: I definitely agree. Thanks for sharing!

@Calm Man: "Accepting reality" is one of the central foundations of personal growth, which is why I will be talking about it a great deal in my blog.

You can leave me a comment on any of my blog posts about the specific issues you would like to see me address and I will write about them. :D
