Great advice, Leo. As someone who's wrestled with this syndrome (and the self-imposed depression that it caused) quite a bit in recent years - and has largely overcome it - I can say firsthand that your advice is spot on. Negative thinking was a HUGE part of my problem, and my making a choice to stop doing it has been a huge component of my happiness in recent years.

I think the "I can't get no satisfaction syndrome" is the realization of nihilism. There is nothing to strive for except the accumulation of resources and perhaps the minimization of suffering, if you want.

God said: do this, this and this, and your life will have meaning.

We said: no, you're wrong, and you don't exist. So, what ACTUALLY gives our life meaning?

And then we never found it, because the idea of "do the right thing and get into heaven, where you'll live for all eternity" was a false idol that has only left us with bitter disappointment.

Somehow, reading this post and the comments & posting my earlier comments above, jolted me out of the slump I've been in for awhile.

This week I did what usually works for me - I started tossing clutter (magazines, paperwork), went through the closet & drawers & found some clothes & shoes to donate. Started a thorough cleaning of the house and just kept moving.

For some reason this renews my optimism & reminds me of all the things I have to appreciate - including the people I love & enjoy.

I'm not finished yet, but I feel much more positive and ready to try some of the other suggestions listed!
