Some really good advice up above - I would give most of the same, learned from experience - the hard way.

Definitely keep in mind:

1. Do not be part of the problem

2. If your job is seriously impacting your happiness, then you need to change your job - it is simply NOT that important!

[...] Five Strategies for Surviving a Tough Boss This article’s for you, Bill. A reader named Bill wrote me with tales of his nightmarish boss and asked how he could handle it, since he was considering quitting. I was ruminating on a post (and doing some research on it) when this article popped up that answered things very well. (@ zen habits) [...]

Very good advice.
I hope many people take this advice to heart.
If you can't do it all in one gulp, take it step by step.

@IRG — You're right, I didn't give specific information for dealing with a boss who is mentally unbalanced. They certainly exist, but I can't believe the numbers are statistically significant. Anyway, this post was long and could have been book length — or a series of books — if I covered all of the possible circumstances.

Again, you're right that the strategies outlined may not be effective in your situation.

The basic advice is that if you're in an untenable situation with a ruthless or, okay, unstable boss — and the organization won't address the issues if you raise them — get out. If your finances don't allow for that right now, start planning your departure.
