I have my first tri-a-tri on June 6. I've been in moderate training mode since January, with a ramp up in April to include more consistent swimming. I've always competed in swimming, can bike and run, but always average in all three. I've had a few set backs in the past weeks and was considering bailing - this article has given me faith that even the next 1.5 weeks can be put to good use for my goal, which is just to finish! Thanks for sharing a positive message.

There is no doubt in saying that triathlon is one of the great tests of human endurance. Most of the people fear from doing so thinking that it’s very tough to do. I also think the same. But I am very glad to read that there are quite a few dissimilar distances of triathlons that the normal human being can go through and easily complete with only having a few months of training. You have nicely described the things to be considered for doing so. Thanks a lot for sharing useful information.

Great article! I did my first marathon last year and this year, I'm going to attempt a sprint triathlon. I'm looking forward to the challenge and always looking for tips. I'm going to be doing a mini-sprint triathlon over Memorial Day weekend and I'll be keeping my progress updated on my site and my show, Fit Life, in the coming year.

Thanks!

Just for the experience I tried a Sprint Tri. I'm glad I did it, but I personally enjoy running the best. Anybody curious should give it a go, who cares if you're not the fastest?! Go for it!

I did my first triathlon almost 12 years ago. About 30 races later, I now coach first-timers in Washington DC. I agree with just about everything here, though I wouldn't recommend buying a bike on Craigslist or Ebay. Bikes are like shoes...it's all about the fit.

Mental power is crucial. Everything that pushes the limits of the body must be mastered by the mind. And yes, speaking of number 7, surrounding yourself with mentally powerful people can only rise you upper and upper.

thanks! #7 is the key part, it is very frustrating to work it out alone. One thing I want to add is to participate local triathlon events. For example, in MA, there will be a triathlon every spring. It is a lot of fun just with participating.

I did a couple of sprint triathlon's last year and I'm planning to do more this year. Possibly working up to the Olympic distance.

I did the first one with my mountain bike and the second with a friends speed bike. The speed bike cut my biking time in half as it was much easier peddling with a bike that is made for roads.

Also if you want to make your transition from bike to run easier then reduce the resistance and up the cadence of your peddling as you get close to the switchover point. This prepares your legs for running

I have only competed in a few sprint distance Tri's but I have found that diet is a huge part of training. It could also be the biggest part of what you do the day before the race. A great online resource for food ideas is http://www.chefbud.com. I have found that he responds to almost every request that he gets via Twitter as well @chefbud. If your training for your next Triathlon don't forget your food training as well.
