I work from home and absolutely love it. I quit my job in travel 10 months ago to start my own company and it's a whole lifestyle improvement. Buying back 10% of your time just in travel time to work as well as losing the tendency to stay back after hours. I do miss the social interaction with people but now that there are 2 of us in the office that has improved. I think the workspace design comment was particularly attractive, to get total control of the office was great.

Yes, I recently got involved in my company work@home program and I can't say enough good things about it. I get and extra 2 hours of my time back between commute and lunch. I can Start work earlier. I actually take a lunch since I get to see my family or get something else done around the house. I have more time now to work on my own Business. The list goes on and on.

Great Post.

After reading the book "Why Work Sucks" I was very excited about the prospect of being in a "results-only work environment". Just focusing on getting the results completed rather than drive or bus time to the office, putting up with all the time-wasters, and being able to choose my own hours was thrilling.

As my former company discussed implementing a results-only work environment, the fear of providing too much freedom set in. The need to know where everyone is at all times become a concern just "in case we have a question that needs an immediate answer". The concept of setting expectations and having each person achieve their specific results was too much to grasp. The other concern was how we could truly measure that each employee (salaried) was really working the 40 hours per week.

There is still this attitude that a person must be seen within a lot of companies. Although many companies have implemented strategies based on results it will be a long time before we focus on the results and not just "being there".

I've saved a lot on transportation costs as well as unnecessary trips to Starbucks ever since I worked from home.

The best part is I had more time with my daughter.

Yes! I'm waiting for that day when I don't have to go into the office. I think I'm more productive working at night in my bedroom - no disturbance...

Wonderful post and have read every single comment - all interesting. I went from being in a corporate office for 9 years to working for myself, at home, and I will never, ever look back :)

I'm finding that I do need a dedicated space to work, and although I have that, it is small, cramped and not a great place to be, hence looking at a garden office. I need that distinction of space.

What I did find interesting is this:

www.officepod.co.uk

VERY well-designed, focusing on a rental business model at employers - highlighting tax saving, commute saving and the eco benefits. A very nice website too.
