The hardest thing for me was to realize that the world keeps moving on even without me. The sun still rises and birds still migrate south. If there's a disruption, I just have to get back up and keep up with time!

"If all fails, start the habit again, the right way." This is definitely a lesson we all have to learn, it is very easy to give up on things.

Yeah, you need a system of goals and organizing as a reference but life is dynamic and so should you. Accept, adappt and go back.

So true Leo... life happens and always will, but that is no excuse for (re)starting our goals.

I think the idea of small incremental goals help us with the start and stop process.

Borrowing generically from your marathon training... if I have a mileage target for each week but have to take 2 weeks off for a life event then I can simply restart at a level 1 or 2 weeks prior to my having to suspend training. A good plan will have built in lags or slower times and you can use those to catch up.

Thanks for removing yet another excuse from our seeming never ending supply!

Great post. I am late on commenting like everyone else I have a busy life. I have struggled since the birth of my son to find time to follow my goals and sleep deprivation (which everyone now acknowledges as a form of torture) does not help. I have learnt a lot about myself but I couldn't have done this without my partner.

I have now made time for exercise. I now get up before my son (this was unimaginable 5 months ago but he is now sleeping more so I am sleeping more) and go cycling. My partner is still sleeping soundly like my son so I am able to take this time.

I can't believe the effects of exercise. I feel more positive, have more energy and have time to think. I have kept it up even when I have had little sleep.

I had a disruption this week when some ************** idiot stole my bike but I put a message on the staff intranet and got myself a cheap second hand replacement. I have just been cycling in the rain and feel great.

Jon you will get a routine back - as someone who loves sleep you must promise your partner a chance to catch up on their sleep or chosen activities. When my husband does this he his rewarded!!

Always remember your motivation, and get excited.

Somehow this sentence woke me up with a jolt. It's made me remember how to get excited again for my goals, even to act just "as if" at the start. And now, I'm into them again ~ with passion and joy! Thank you.

Been reading zenhabits for a long time now, and i just want to say, Leo, you and your guest writers are awesome and you make a diiference in people's lives.

I've bought your books from Amazon, and can't wait for them to arrive!
