[...] Steps Towards a More Sustainable Life of Less Leo Babauta of Zen Habits shares his ideas on live better with less. “We work more than ever before, despite advances in labor-saving technology that mean we should be able to work less. We do so to support a lifestyle that has become more expensive than ever, because of the new levels of convenience and abundant consumer goods that we’ve become accustomed to. We can break out of this trap, by consuming less and then needing to work less.” Share: [...]

This reminds me of the last subdivision I designed. I really lobbied hard for sidewalks to be included in my design, but the municipality would not consider it. The previous neighbourhood, constructed in the 1970's, had been designed with the automobile in mind: sidewalks were deemed un-necessary. Today the city wants the neighbourhoods to match and the sidewalk was not included in the budget, and now I see kids walking to school in "my" subdivision in danger of being struck by a car; especially in winter when they have no choice but to walk within the traffic lanes. Have we become so stupid?

This is really an amazing post. But I have some questions and some views.

If a person starts to spend less, then maybe he'll have more money. What will he do with those extra money?

If a person that has just enough money to buy his needs tries to live simplier and spend lesser would then have a few extra money and would eventually be able to save some. What will he do with that money?

A person that has money barely enough to buy his needs, well.... how would he spend less? :)

I think some of those gadgets and stuffs were created because other people has lots of extra money. They just had that craving to spend on something else because they already have all they need and all they want and their bored and unsatisfied again.

Now people with a few savings would then work double to buy those new stuffs. Who would not be interested on those new stuffs anyway?

People with a lot of wealth will continue to work double maybe for these reasons.
1. The need to keep the wealth and avoid bankcruptcy.
2. The need to save some more for the next generations or the family heirs.
3. The need to compete with other wealthy people to have confidence that they won't lose in any deals.

People with average income or average wealth will continue to keep saving and earning more maybe for these reasons.
1. To avoid getting left behind.
2. To somehow feed their curiousity about those new gadgets and stuff that the wealthy ones are having and using.
3. It seems fun being wealthy so why not work hard and maybe get lucky and become wealthy.

If I have a lot of extra money I'll make a machine that will makes me sleep when I want to and makes me awake and alert when I want to. Lol! I hope somehow I made sense.

Cool post... Sometime big joy can come from small things.
True that where you are means nothing if you can't enjoy it with someone (special) or beloved family members.

[...] Steps Towards A More Sustainable Life Of Less. I really enjoyed this post and the list of ideas contained. Walking more, building communities with less sprawl, and living in smaller homes are all things I’d like to see us move towards as a way of creating a simpler existence.
