This is a great post. Another step to think about here is avoiding other discontents. People that are habitual complainers or that perceive that everything in their lives is going wrong can only further bring you down. I have recently learned how breaking ties with such people can have a positive effect on my own well-being.

Leo, this is a brilliant article. The wisdom so simple, yet so powerful. What do I do when I feel a sense of discontentment? I do a lot of what you recommend:

1. Appreciate everything I have in my life right now (I have a "feel good" box under my bed of nice notes, momentos and little tit bits that remind me of lovely moments from my past)
2. Acknowledge everything I have already achieved to date (including challenges I have overcome)
3. Exercise
4. Indulge in something I'm passionate about

The first 3 are self-explanatory but allow me to expand on #4. When I was unemployed some time ago, I knew I had to do something with my time and to get my mindset out of worrying about dollars and not having a job. So I asked myself a question: "What could I do right now that I'm completely passionate about?" As a result of that one question, I started to create a video of my trip to Africa. I had never edited video or photos before and it was the most amazing experience. It took be several weeks to get it done but everyday I found myself eager to get up and work on my project and my passion, rather than dreading getting up, having to apply for work. The end results:
1.I've now got a video that many people actually ask if I got it professionally done because it looks so great. I'm always proud to say that the video is completely the result of my efforts.
2. I have a great way to relive the memories of my awesome holiday to Africa
3. I have now learned a new skill which is proving quite lucrative as an internet marketer.
So now whenever I am down or feeling a little discontented, I ask "What can I do that I'm passionate about?" My attitude and whole outlook immediately changes.

I love this blog, but you missed a very big one here.
One of the best ways to fight discontentment is to put your faith in Shiva/Kali/Buddha/Mohamed/Zoroaster/Baal/Satan/the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Jabba the Hutt. You will not instantly lose all discontentment, but you will overall be much more content.

Dear Leo

Your post is essential for most modern people, livíng in the rich parts of the world. My cure for discontentment is to read blog-posts like yours, and books that inspires me to look at the world with a new vision, and at the same time feel connected to other people. I think that lack of connection with oneself and other people creates discontentment. So I think the best advice is to reach out to others and make a positive action, and by that creating a new spiral of meaning in your life.
