Great article to get back on track with! So often, we beat ourselves up because we aren't perfect, but habits take time to break and as long as we dust ourselves and try again, that's what matters. It's never too late to be better!

Great tips. I actually never understood why people choose New Year of all days for their resolutions. The day before they were up late, probably drank quite a bit, so they are tired and hungover the next day. So it's probably the most difficult day of the year to put your resolutions into practice and obviously most people fail. And they give themselves only one chance a year - why that?

For example when you try to diet healthy, there will always be a time when you don't make it, for one reason or the other. But there's no reason to wait for the next year to come for another try.

I've found that since I adopted the model of New Year's Revolution rather than resolutions, I've eventually excelled.

Give it a try - but wait until 2010. It's no good now.

This year, I made my new year's resolution in November - to run a 12k fun run that was taking place in March. Well I've done it now, with a proper amount of training (from not running at all) and impressed myself with a faster-than-thought time. BUT since then I have sat on my bum for almost two weeks!! Thanks for this. It's reminded me not to rest on my laurels for achieving the goal I set myself before Christmas but to build on it and set the next goal. Now can I manage a half marathon in May do we think?

I don't like this approach! This site is about motivation. You should post something like - 25% of the year are gone! How are you doing so far? I know the last point is get going, but you don't have to be so mellow about people. They will tell these excuses to themselves all the time.

The acknowledgment of the effort is what resonates for me. As success is an ongoing process as even when you've achieved a goal you have to continue doing what's necessary in order to maintain the achievement. So, any effort beyond inception is an achievement.

What I think is important is taking responsibility for your own outcome. Whether you get to the point you were shooting for or not, owning what you did achieve, what you put into it, what, perhaps you didn't put into it and not blaming your outcome on someone/something else means you were successful.

Continuous improvement says that you can always give it another go and any further advancement is a successful achievement.
