I think I could:
My Computer
Some Clothes
Some Books
Box of Old Photos/Letters/etc
My Dogs' Stuff

I still wouldn't want to leave behind most of my other stuff (more books, DVDs, games, etc..) but if I had to, that would be it.

I would take:

-Laptop (plus car charger)
-BlackBerry (plus car charger)
-cat (he'll be fine!)
-Chapstick
-Deodorant
-As many of my books that would fit in the trunk of my '99 Accord
- extra gas for the car
-My mini photo album

That's it. That's all that I would need to be content :)

Great post! I have a similar question I ask myself from time to time: what would I grab out of my house if it were burning down and everything would be destroyed? Really what it comes down to for me, is everything is replacable so therefore, I do not need it. At the moment, things that concern me and I feel the need to bring: important documents that need to be stored better, items on computers like photos that are not backed up, and that's all that comes to mind. Not bad. But, why does my house still look like I am overindulgent? I guess that means I have some work to do! Just need a little time to minimize!

I can't tell y'all how much this posting inspired me!

I am moving in two days and have been purging and packing since last couple of weeks. A true fan of Zenhabits and Simplicity, I would natually like to think that I am a minimalist. I was shocked when realized how much procession I owned as I got everything out from every corner of my apartment.

This article helped me whenever I got sentimental over my stuff. Had a "everything must go" sale and it's super easy. I don't regret or miss my stuff at all. It is such an AMAZING feeling to see your space clear up effortlessly and you got cold hard cash in return!!

I totally agree with Karen. It's an absolutely different thing if you're forced to live with minimal possessions or if you do so by choice.

I'm thinking about minimizing my possessions right now and discarding, selling or replacing items I don't use or love, but I'm not sure that I'd want this measure of minimalism.
I'd like to balance a sense of mobility (like in "If I feel like/have to, I can move within a week without needing a ten-ton-truck") with having a permanent home like "this is the right place for me with the right people around me, a place to return to between my travels, a place where my roots are" after living like a vagabond for a long time in my youth. This doesn't have to involve lots of stuff, but it tends to involve immobile possessions like a garden.

Plus, I'm a multi-faceted creative person and while I could *survive* without these lots of needles, fabrics, yarns, paints, books, scores and musical instruments, I just *want* to have my keyboard and my guitar, my song sheets and scores, my sewing machine and my stash of yarn and fabrics around me.

My most important question in decluttering has become: "Do I actually want to keep this, do I love it, will I use it?"

Stuff is highly overrated. For a long time I was a sentimental packrat - knew where and when I obtained everything I had, and where I had it stashed. A few months in a spartan corporate apartment several years ago taught me how easy it is to live without all that I left behind. I moved a couple years later after significant clearing out of stored stuff, in a 10 foot truck. That included bedroom furniture and washer / dryer. I desparately miss the books that I gave away, though.

Essentials:

#1 - my purse (aka my portable financial and communications center with a mini-drug store for personal items, jewelry stash, and lunch bag)
#2 - my dog and his essentials
#3 - my glasses and spare contact lenses
#4 - few changes of clothes & shoes, all season
#5 - several (or more) books, and writing paper/journal

Non-essentials I might add:
- some pictures and/or memorabilia
- legal docs in my little fireproof safe
- laptop... maybe

The trick is to still have a permanant address for things like driver license and taxes... Or, become an outlaw.
