I am a Japanese and live in a small city in Japan for 23 years.

I went to Helsinki, Finland last year for two weeks and lose 5 kgs (11 pounds?). I guess the reason for this is that groceries in Helsinki was expensive for my standard so I didn't eat much.

My trip to Vancouver last month was the same experience. We walked all day and slept very well every night. The main thing I noticed there was that everyone was in good shape and really took care of themselves. I did see some occasional people who were overweight, but one of them was riding a bike. A lot of people walk and take the transit system. Many of them run to catch the seabus or the skytrain. There were health food and organic grocery stores everywhere. They also have a lot of vegan restaurants, but sadly I didn’t make it to one. There were many good vegan food choices. The only food I have ever missed since becoming vegan has been sushi, but I was very happy to find vegan sushi on the menu!

The city I live in,(SJ,NB) I would say about 70% or more are overweight or obese. It seems also, that the people here do not care about their health and just pig out on all junk food. It's not common to see anyone on a bike. There is very little to do and everything is so far apart, it's so much easier to drive. We don't have a car or want one, but taking the bus or getting a ride is almost the same thing. Luckily we are able to walk to work.

I am an Indian.

I worked for a software company in India that often sent employees to U.S for three or six months.

Without fail, anyone returning from the U.S trip would be 5-20 pounds heavier. Tells you something, doesn't it?

It is amazing how a small shift in habits can bring on real changes. I decided early this year to cook more from scratch using natural and organic ingredients. This got me off bread and I began to lose weight. I began to add some more changes, and so far I have lost 19 lb, and I have never felt better at age 57. Losing weight wasn't my initial intention, but it was a welcome consequence of my desire to eat less prepared food.

that's quite informative there!.. :D

it's really great to walk or bike around!.. i enjoy those activities.. however, it's too dangerous to do them here in our country..
the city streets here are dusty and mean people lurk around with intentions of snatching your valuables.. really scary!
so we just have to ride on vehicles for safety.. D:

Contrast this blog with my experience with the family camp at Michigan I had recently. I did exercise and walk quite a bit, but I also rationalized eating bigger portions, and gained 3 lbs over the weekend! I think I need to adjust my ways to bend more toward Japan :)
