Interesting that some folks think they can feel complete without helping others feel the same. So quickly we forget that in this modern world, our own perception of self-value depends on how others see us. Thinking about this inversely, other people's perceptions of self-value are based on our own treatment of them. Make someone feel good, they'll want to make you feel good. Everyone then feels good.

Good post. lol.

Thank you for your essay, which helped me. Your thoughts on giving inspired me to write a post on my blog. Although not exactly a fuzzy wholehearted embrace, I agreed with most of what you wrote, except for one itsy-bitsy thing, which I wrote about here.....http://fredazeh.wordpress.com/2009/07/14/beware-of-good-advice-it-might-not-ring-true/

This post rings very true for me! I was feeling pretty miserable in college one day when a freshman I tutored mentioned she needed to go to the hospital. She was about to pay for a taxi when I offered her a ride. I was having a really terrible week with some massive financial headaches, and I thought to myself that I should try to help someone else out and save them some cash and do something kind. Low and behold, I found some cash I had stupidly stashed in the trunk of my car while I was cleaning it to make room for the freshman and some of her stuff. I never felt the power of karma so quickly and clearly! Now, whenever I want something, I try to think about how to give it. I'm far from perfect - I suffer from all of the human flaws - but when I give the world kindness, I feel so much better.

I often think of the saying that "you can't control other people or their behavior, only your reaction to them". That helps me remember that I cannot EXPECT people to act a certain way - but I can help create a better situation for both parties with my reaction. It is definitely not all about me, and sometimes by giving off an unexpectedly kind reaction, you'll get an equally unexpected kind treatment in return.
