Leo,
Great article! Too many people judge their life by how much they can consume...
I have some "stuff" but I find a lot of it just gets in the way. I say de-clutter and consume less! I recommend traveling (even a local hike in the hills is fine) and collecting "memories". They are a lot easier to store! ~ Nelson, trade show marketing help

First few paragraphs reminded me of George Carlin's talk about Stuff -- he's great, so is this post.

Agreed, stuff just made a lot of junks in my house and i hate it. Now i realize i just need a simpler life. Modern life just made me more attach to stuff than people and life. Thanks.

@tracy I totally agree. With this crisis and side effects, I've got a strategy of keeping one dollar on my wallet. Keep cards home and go out with one dollar. Then whenever I feel like I want something I say "I only have one dollar" then i realize this one thing I wanted, I don't really need it. And this "shopping desire" just fades away. I keep weeks of buying nothing, because I really have all I need (except for food, of course xD)

[...] Love Life, Not Stuff at Zen Habits. The title pretty much says it all, but when you catch yourself filling the void in your life with “stuff”, it might be time for a little self reflection of the non-consumption kind. [...]

I just did that cleansing last weekend, in my bedroom. It helps when someone who's not attached to your things tells you or asks you if something is worth keeping it.
The result of it? Many many kids will be happy with the toys I'm giving away, and many students will enjoy my college books. And I'm happy for all the clutter taken off.
Next step: clothes and shoes. I'll do it this weekend. It will be fun :)

The old saying is always right "You can't take it with you!" (even if you do put it in your casket)

Just imagine how much less stress and more happiness people could have....if they started "possessing" less...and started "appreciating" more. This could be with material possessions and even more importantly...with relationships with other people. All pain, fear, hurt, sorry, jealousy, anger.....usually stem from just trying to "possess" someone....and since we know nothing is forever, the pain will come soon enough.

I have always hated clutter. Has a child, my room had a door to the walk in attic. I would clean it out for my parents every now and then. I've never own a dresser. Now that I am married with 2 kids, clutter is all around. My husband does not share my uncluttered life style.
We live in an area were wild fires are possible. I declutter often, and I ask myself if there was a fire would I have miss this item? Would I even remember I owned this item? The only thing I would miss (my kids, husband are safe) are pictures. So I have made every picture into a digital image. I have them on the computer, online, and in a fire safe. And pictures are really our experiences.

I read an article that said that we buy something for the idea of the item. This is so true. If you buy a new night time facial cleaner and matching lotion, you (in the store) see yourself use the item every night, you may feel calm and relaxed. But you do not need that cleaner and lotion to relax you. Take time to wash your face before bed with what you already have.

Thanks for the great article!
