This article made me think of how appreciative my children are. They, at the age of 5 , 6 and believe it or not 17 still take the time to thank us for dinner, playing with them, or when we go places together. The secret??! Simple, they hear my wife and I thank each other for "simple" things all the time. There's something magical about hearing your son say "Dad, thanks for playing with me?", and knowing he means it. I don't think we stop mirroring other people's behavior, no matter what age we are. What kind of behavior are you encouraging today?

I'm a big fan of gratitude lists. Putting pen to paper listing the things I am grateful for helps put my issues and problems in perspective. A heart filled with gratitude has no room for sadness.

"I try to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart cannot entertain great conceits. When brimming with gratitude, one’s heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, the finest emotion that we can ever know."
-Bill Wilson

I'm reminded of the simple yet extremely effective words of Francine Ward:

"Self-Esteem Comes from Doing Esteemable Acts"

Focusing on others and finding ways of being of service is the quickest way of realizing that "I" am not the center of the universe.

Amazing post! It's really true that living a life with gratitude and thankfulness (even if it is for a few moments) goes a long way in relieving us from tension, anxiety and frustration. It takes off all the stress immediately and makes us lighter and happier. I am definitely going to practice these 3 Jedi Mind tricks in my daily life!

@ Torrey,

You're totally on the money there Torrey.... and interestingly enough I just ate a fantastic sandwich that my wife prepared for me - and of course I thanked her generously because it was so good, which made her feel good :-)

@ Joseph Scandura,

"I really like the appreciating the boss tip, especially since I am the boss."

That was pretty funny. Thanks for the laugh.

@ Alison | Quest for Balance,

Hi Alison, you just became my favorite person. I love food, especially when it's a surprise :-)

@ Nicola,

"HI,
It is not so much the things you write that yre great - but also the comments are so worth reading…..the odd one did bring tears to my eyes."

I totally agree. Thanks to everyone for being so honest and sharing what is true for them.

"If you want to be happy, be." ~Leo Tolstoy

That's one of the sayings I live by. By keeping yourself happy everyday, you get to share that "awesomeness" with everybodyelse you encounter. Just a simple smile could really brighten up someone's day. A simple smile can put away all the negative things that had happened and it definitely gives you a reason to go on with life everyday.

Another cool trick I found is to say to yourself that you will do something fun someday. Like "I will travel to Paris someday". It may not help you get to Paris, but it makes you feel better instantly.

I posted a link to this article on my Facebook Wall. One of my FB friends commented:
"Did the three today & it does work, Mr. Meris. Cheers!"

I responded:"Thanks for your testimony. You serve as a living proof of the efficacy of the strategies."
