Normally I love your stuff Leo, but I have to disagree with this one. If you look at people who *really* make a dent in history they are all workaholics:
-Bill Gates
-Walt Disney
-Steve Jobs
-Edison
Etc...

All of them were obsessed with their one thing and worked at it as much as possible. Gates was classic for never going home and Edison often worked 15 hour days.

I'm sure you yourself work a lot of hours keeping this great blog going. It seems that if you want to be truly great you need to do more, not less?

Thanks for this awesome post Leo. It is always a good idea to pause and ask ourselves why we are doing what we do. Much of the pressure and stress we suffer from is self-imposed. We are in control of our lives and we can choose to simplify things and enjoy the journey. I like to keep a copy of this quote by Alan Cohen where I'll see it: “How would I be doing this differently if I were willing to let this be easy?” Sometimes we just have to stop and think. Thanks for the reminder to enjoy life.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly. Actually, I just wrote a post that echoes some of the sentiments you have here. I consider myself a functional hedonist. Increase pleasure, minimize pain.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love to spend my free time learning. But, you won't find me fretting over filling every second of every day with things. I enjoy the practice of setting a few major 'to-dos' for each day, and after attacking those with veracity and efficacy, I enjoy myself for the remainder of the day. Good stuff!

So true ! You can't be creative and full of ideas if you are overworked. Time out clears your mind and allows more to come in later. I love to walk my dog along the nature walk and just sit on a walk sometimes - but I don't do it enough!

Leo,

First, I thoroughly enjoy your blog. I don't always agree with you, but much of what you write does resonate.

Re: simplicity, simplifying...isn't it much like writing? Clear, concise prose isn't just about reducing, it's also about perfecting...the perfect word, phrase, sentence, even paragraph. Sometimes clarity comes from subtraction, sometimes from addition. To seek and find that perfect turn of phrase, whether by adding or subtracting, must surely be one of life's most exhilarating experiences.

So, shouldn't simplification be as much about pure, clear, life-enhancing growth as about pure, clear, life-enhancing retreat?

Thanks, again, for your thoughts.

Good advice. Busting your butt all the time can be stressful, which isn't especially healthy for you. Everyone needs to sit back and take it easy once in a while.

I think I'll go take a nap.
