Getting enough sleep is hard to do for many of us, and usually very much under-appreciated in its importance. I'm not talking just daily mini-breaks and time-outs for relaxation and rejuvenation (these are separate vital components of creativity) -- but practicing the habit of getting adequate sleep every night can make a measurable difference sustained creative output.

Wish it was easier to practice than to preach!

Hi Leo,

Interesting paradox in the "stop reading creativity advice" point, given that your readers appear to have gained a lot of value from reading yours!

Cheers, Chris

Karfil@PDPro has the same tip that I put forward -- great time for inspiration is when in bed, relaxed and about to sleep. Sometimes its surprising when you replay it the following morning. I suggest useing a dictaphone instead of pencil and paper - don't have to have the light on.

This has got to be one of the best posts I've stumbled upon...EVER! And at such an auspicious time too. I'm about to got back to college for a degree in Engineering Design Graphics. I previously dropped the courses as I had a difficult time staying focused, or being creative. It's especially hard when you're first learning since you're essentially copying things until you have enough skills to start designing on your own. I find this list both comforting and inspirational...as well as many of the suggestions in the subsequent comments. This is obviously a very strong and friendly community. Take care! ^_^

Actually the qoute “The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.” - Albert Einstein at the top is kind of funny. I have this mixed urge between "hiding" sources and "Radical" transparency and that is exactly what got me on the downside. I had no problem sharing knowledge and inspiration, however I did have a problem with people using that knowledge against me. It becomes overwhelming and draining in the process.

It's like a catch 22, wanting to spread the love but creativity and progress can and usually is syncopated in the process.

This post/list is right up my pathway. Muchos gracias Leo.
The points that I tend to favour and follow are:

"Look for inspiration all around you, in the smallest places."
"Just get it out, no matter how crappy that first draft."
"Don't try for perfect. Just get it out there, asap, and get feedback."
"Ignore the naysayers."
"Teach and you'll learn."
"Shake things up, see things in new ways."
"Turn your work into play."
"Don't force it. Relax, play, it will start to flow."
and finally
"Most of all have fun doing it."

Excellent point John. I usually have pen and paper or notebook near for when inspiration strikes. Admiring someone else's work is a big inspiration to help get the "creative juices" flowing for me too, Alex.

Here are some quotes that I found along the way:

"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see."
~Henry David Thoreau~

"They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."
~Edgar Allan Poe~

and

"The world is but a canvas to the imagination."
~Henry David Thoreau

Again thanks for the post/list Leo!

Great work! Creative types, ironically, are the ones who have the most trouble getting "put together" enough to CREATE! Excellent thoughts.
