Awesome post. Very thought provoking. Read it yesterday and reread it today. I see much of myself in #1 and #2, and thought a lot about changing them. Pushed the past to the back shelf and moved away from the negative thoughts and am feeling better than I have in some time. Thanks!

The sci fi writer David Brin occasionally riffs on Thought Memes, that ideas are like viruses. That some catch on and spread, some die out.
A tangent to #4, Experience new things, I've felt that kids need to be exposed to ideas, in small ways, when young, so they can build up immunities to the destructive concepts. I remember friends from High School who's parents kept them very sheltered so they had no immunities to the ideas of the big world when they left for college. They couldn't handle the concepts of "Drugs are perfectly Fine" or "Cheating is OK" or "Greed Is Good" or "Fundamentalist Christianity will think for You" or "Hookups does not equal Love" or "Your Parents won't take care of you" and lost it for years, until they found a way to live in the bigger world.

Disgree with #1 - Negative self talk - I see an increasing amount of
people just who "overcame" their critical voice and then doing
irrational things like buying a house when the financial situation is
unsure and so on.

The critical voice is very important - it's purpose is not to just
prevent you from being hurt emotionally - it's purpose is telling you
about the things you need to watch out / take care when planning a big
step - makes sense, isn't it?

Also disagree with #3 - Use affirmations to train your mind. - It is
somehow related to what I said before - it helps stopping your
critical voice. I would not be surprised if people making heavy use of
this technique fall into manic-depression - first they talk themselves
into being successful and then - much later after a lot of effort -
truth bubbles up.

On the other hand totally agree with #2 - Get rid of the past and #4 -
Open yourself to new experiences.

I think getting rid of the past is difficult for most people. Majority of our judjements are based on how people treated us in the past.
