I couldn't agree more. It's hard to find time to do what we love, but if we make time for it we'll be happier in the end.

This was a very motivating post, and I will be passing it on to my husband who seems a bit mired in life.

I will say that identifying your hold ups was the key factor for me to move forward. I aspired to be a writer, and nurse, and I am now accomplishing both and feel more alive than I ever have! You become a gift to the world, and a beacon of light to others when you are lit up with passion and desire for what you do in life. Thank you again for this post.

@ James

I think in this case that maybe it is best to consider goals seperate from doing what you love. In that case a budding President's passion would be politics - and trying to make a change to the world - which can be done without needing to be President. He/She may aim to be President and may not suceed but in the process will be pursuing the passion - politics.

@ John Fjellstad
Interesting points - but I'd argue in the case of Gandhi and Washington that they were playing to their strengths still - Gandhi had love for his political/spiritual notions and that caused him to take the actions he did - as did Washington. I think it is important to look at the bigger picture - you change your diaper out of love for your child and the want to care for it.

As for taking out the trash and painting the house - I'm a bit stuck there too.

Got to agree with Phil.

if everybody do what they love, who will pick up the trash, paint the house, change the diapers? Did Gandhi really enjoy starving to death or would he have preferred to live in a just world where he wasn't necessary? Did Washington really love leading men to their death or was it something he thought was necessary?

And what would happen to the American way of life if the millions of Chinese currently propping up the American lifestyle decides to do what they love to do instead of making knick-knacks?

The problem is the things I love I'm either not good at,or you can't get paid for. The job I was best at and that played to what talents I have was one I detested.

Most people will not be able to achieve this because many of the jobs that need to be done, few will enjoy, and many things that people would like to do will only ever have a limited number of potential employment opportunities,if any.

Nice piece, but what about this "No one can stop you if you want it enough."? That's wishful thinking. There can be only one president of the USA at one time. Over 40 years maybe a maximum of 10. So we obviously can't all be that, no matter how much we want it.

It doesn't mean you give up, it means you make friends with the fact that we don't always get what we want...

@Jason Terhorst - Simply, someone would develop a better way of dealing with our garbage and our cleaning. Society would adjust. Don't ever argue for mediocrity. Some people will never try, and that's fine, but don't ever try to argue we need people to not try.

My only regret is that I didn't find my passion soon enough in life. With a wife and family that I was unwilling to give up (step 6) I'm unable to just let go of work and everything to persue my passion. Instead I give up a little sleep to get up early to work on it. And progress has been slow, but you'd be amazed at the connections that have practically jumped in my way to make this a reality. I'm not there yet, but little by little I'm making it happen.

What about the garbage men?

Suppose everyone on the planet does what they love (and are good at)? Well, no one loves to be garbage handlers or maids... what would you do about them?
