I have a goal to wake up very early in the morning, knowing that there is another thread on such topic I'll leave it at that. Check out my blog, feel free to comment!

Early wake-up |
|
My challenge for July was getting to bed earlier, with the result of an earlier wake-up! What's intriguing to me about identifying a key goal, is that it becomes a whole process. I'm so grateful for discovering this website and the forum.
Danny, your blogsite is great! Now that I have the (sometimes inconsistent) habit of getting to bed earlier, I find it easier to identify the other habits that all fall out of late bedtimes - late awake, late to work, procrastination ("making" myself late)...by spending too much time on the computer (August challenge to reduce).
Taken one at a time , these do not seem to be much, but are much more manageable. Yes, I'd like to change many things at once. But the reality of altering bad habits, is that (for me) this would set me up for failure. I'd rather have one small success a month, than feel defeated by too many challenges. Not only that, but I've discovered that I can really understand on a deeper level, and internalize, the impact of one habit. Odd analogy maybe, but when I'm altering my medications (which are quite a few), if I change more than one at a time (amount, introduction), I have no idea what is responsible for specific results. Usually this ends in disaster. Baby steps mean success!

I am having the same problem. My goal for this month was to go from a 7:30am wake up to a 5:00am wake up. For the first couple of days I was able to start getting up at 6:00am. The big problem is that I can't seem to get to bed earlier so I am exhausted the next day. I have now gone back to a 7:00am wake up so I am basically back to where I was. Here we go again.
Trying to go bed earlier is so hard. Especially when you don't get home till 6:00pm and you have 3 kids to get fed and in bed. And now the Olympics are going and I love to watch that. Damn them.

early wake up |

Wow, changing from 7:30 wake-up to 5am is a big change! what about altering by less (ie 10 minutes) each week, then slowly working back? I know how hard it is when you get home late, and with family, etc. I work in retail, and when I do evening shifts we don't get home till well after 10. Still wired, hungry (for no reason), and just feels right to stay up later.
Earlier this year I consulted with a nutritionist who used to be a police officer, and she taught me that our bodies have a rhythm. If we don't make it to bed by 10 or 10:30, we may as well just stay up till 1am, as we've missed our bodies' opportunity for a deep early sleep. So switching the wakeup without switching the bedtime is just short-changing our sleep! A precious commodity, especially with a family, job, and other responsibilities!
As I write, it's after midnight as I have overnight company, and we are travelling tomorrow. I know I need to get to bed, but the day was so exciting that it's difficult. So I think I've blown it for tonight! I'm happy to continue a seperate challenge with you if you like to adjust bedtimes and wake-up times.

My morning routine is like this:
- Drink fresh water
- Exercise
- Shower
- Meditate (sometimes)
- Eat a healthy meal
Then work.

Hey Jocelain,
I can totally relate to you. Going to sleep early (by 11 PM) is one of my 30 day challenges for this month.. I tried to tackle this challenge in the opposite way by "waking up by 5 am" which is a helluva lot harder when it takes so much effort to do so.
I'm thinking that by taking on challenges counterintuitively or from a different angle can produce dramatic results when you associate them to pain vs pleasure (ie waking up early vs going to sleep early)
I'm using habitzer.net and joesgoals.com (as I'm taking on more than 3 habit challenges at once) to split them evenly between the two so I'm tricking myself into thinking I'm doing less.. lol... we'll see how it goes

Sep 2008 challenge - going to sleep by 11 pm on weekdays, reading at least 20 pages per day, not eating after 9 PM daily. |

Ha ha, what a great idea! I hadn't been to joesgoals before, so thanks for the idea. I really like the graphic format, and had laboured for a whole day at one point to do something similar on Excel! I can't seem to focus on one thing easily; guess I'm an "all or nothing" kinda gal. However, I do recognize that is a habit that can change. I'm going to try Joesgoals for awhile, while focussing on ONE GOAL here. Maybe weight my one goal heavier.
Really enjoyed Zenhabits blog today, and want to learn more about these tools. I'm in the process of starting a business, and having difficulty focusing, so will explore some of the different approaches.
Thanks for the feedback, and keep me posted on how it works for you!
