Zen To Done: The Simple Productivity E-Book!
When I published the Zen To Done: The Ultimate Simple Productivity System series, a number of readers asked for it to be turned into an e-book. I heard the requests, and after some hard work, today I’m making it available for purchase.
Zen To Done takes some of the best aspects of a few popular productivity systems (GTD, Stephen Covey and others) and combines them with the mandate of simplicity. It makes things as simple as possible, and no more.
To get the ZTD system in a handy e-book, with additional material, resources and forms, you can purchase it here:
Reader testimonial: “I had always dabbled in trying to establish some sort of productivity habits, but GTD and everything similar seemed too intensive to realistically implement. ZTD and its simplicity make perfect sense to me.” Christopher
What is ZTD?
Simply put, Zen To Done is a simple system to get you more organized and productive, and keep your life saner and less stressed, with a set of habits. ZTD teaches you:
- The key habits needed to be productive, organized, and simplified … and no more than that.
- How to implement these key habits … tips on forming a habit.
- How to organize these habits into a simple system that will keep everything in your life in its place.
- How to simplify what you need to do.
- Minimal ZTD. Also includes an even simpler version called Minimal ZTD.
Dozens of readers have written to me with comments about how ZTD has changed their lives, made them more organized and less stressed, and has worked better than other productivity systems. It’s definitely worth a try.
Why buy the e-book?
Of course, the ZTD series is still available for free on this blog, so that option is still available. So why would you buy the e-book? A number of reasons:
- It’s handy. All the articles are gathered in one easy-to-read e-book, making it easy to print stuff out, read it on any computer, or take it with you. Much more convenient than a bunch of scattered blog posts.
- There’s more material. To be honest, the series of ZTD posts was incomplete, simply because I didn’t have the time to write all the posts I had planned. Well, when I set out to write this e-book, I decided that I wanted to include everything that I had planned and more, from the 10th step (not available as a post on this blog) to an FAQ to a practical application of ZTD in my everyday life to resources to forms and more. More on this stuff below.
- Forms. I decided to give a sample of how you could set up ZTD with some simple forms. Of course, ZTD is flexible … you don’t need to use these forms, but I thought they’d be useful.
- Resources. Links to articles and tools are available in the e-book.
- FAQ. A number of readers had questions/comments about ZTD that I thought I’d answer in the e-book. I think this will be a useful feature.
- Snazzy new look. The e-book is much nicer looking than the blog, in my opinion, and is easier on the eyes. It was designed by James Wondrack, and I’m very grateful to him for his work on this.
- Author support. If you have questions about the book or any of the concepts in it, I am available to answer questions. Just email me: zenhabits at the gmail. This in itself would probably be worth twice the price of the book if I charged for my services. :)
And because I want to make sure you’re satisfied, I’m including a 100% money-back guarantee. If you aren’t completely happy with the Zen To Done e-book, email me and you’ll get your money back right away.
Pricing: To keep the book affordable, I’m pricing it at $9.50 … less than $10 for something that can improve your life right away … and again, with author tech support! :)
Buy the ZTD e-book now:
Reader testimonial: “I’d say that the minimalist system is a safe first step. The beauty is, of course, that it needn’t be just a first step: it works as it is and some people don’t need to go any further.” Jeff

Thanks Tina! I think it’s 83 pages including the cover, dedication page, table of contents and thank you. Subtract those pages and it’s a little less than 80 pages of content.
I hope you enjoy it!

I love your blog and, in particular, this system. *But* I’m wondering how much, really, the book provides that isn’t available on line. Would you be willing to provide a more developed table of contents (with abstracts, say) or sample pages, like you can look at at Amazon.com?
Oh, how much is it?

Leo,
Way to go on getting this published. I stumbled across your blog about three months ago and have been an avid reader ever since so I had to have the e-book when it was ready.
You did a great job on the design and the content is outstanding. Great work!

It’s late right now, but I’m pretty sure I can’t find a price for the book listed in the article.
I don’t like the feeling of blindly clicking on a ‘buy now’ link to find out what the price. I’d rather it be listed in the main post, even if just once at the bottom of the article.
Hope this works out well for you!

Matthew is right about the price, it couldn’t hurt to mention it in the article. I did click on the ‘Buy now’ button to check on the price, and it’s $9.50 correct?

Thanks for all the comments, guys. A couple of responses:
* Sorry I didn’t list the price in this post. As others have mentioned, it’s $9.50, which I think is a reasonable price. Others suggested I should charge $20, but I wanted to keep it affordable … personally, I wouldn’t pay more than $10 for an ebook. :)
* The ebook is in PDF format with no kind of DRM restrictions or anything. I’m relying on the honesty of my readers here. :)
* If you have any problems with a purchase, feel free to email me at zenhabits at the gmail.
@zero255zero: I should definitely do an ebook on minimalism. If I do, you’ll get a $50 thank you from the first sales. :)
I hope you guys like the ebook … please let me know what you think.

November 6th, 2007, 22:02 pm
Hi Steve … please forgive me as I’m new to selling ebooks. :)
At the moment I only have a PayPal option … what option would work better for you?
PayPal has a service where I could sign up and receive credit cards directly (so you could pay with a credit card and not need a PayPal account). There are also options for Google Checkout, Clickbank, Authorize.net, but I’d have to sign up for those services.
Let me know how I can help. We’ll find a way for you to get the ebook somehow … even if you just want to send me a check directly. :)
Just FYI, I’ve been using PayPal for awhile now with no problems. It seems to work great.

One “complaint” — I read eBooks on my Palm, and have tried to import the PDF file (which printed beautifully for me, and looks great on my PC screen) into Adobe for Palm, and even just as a native file on Docs2Go — and can’t read it on either! Bummer, because a like the portability of an eBook on my Palm… I guess I’ll have to carry paper…

@Frank: Thanks for you feedback. I asked the designer, James, to optimize the ebook for both the computer screen and for printing. Unfortunately, I didn’t think about asking him to also optimize it for mobile devices … the thought didn’t cross my mind.
I wonder if it’s possible to have an ebook look good on all three — printing, PC screen and mobile device? I’m still a novice at this, so please forgive me … but these are definitely issues I need to address for my next ebook (which won’t be out for awhile, so please be patient :).
Anyway, thanks again for the feedback and the nice comments!

Hi Leo,
great book. Even though I followed your ZTD posts there was a lot more in it. How about a translation into other languages? @Frank,
I’m the designer who created the eBook PDF of ZTD and am not aware of how to optimize a PDF for Palm, but wiling to try.
Are you aware of any settings etc that I would need to employ?
Frank Says:
November 8th, 2007, 16:04 pm
@James,
Wow — no idea on the settings. I wonder if Adobe can help? There Reader for Palm is a freebie download, so maybe they are willing to help developers / designers? As far as Docs2Go — well that’s a commercial program, but the PDF reader is supposed to be able to handle native PDF files, with out translation. I really have no idea why the eBook — as is! — isn’t coming across in a readable fashion with either of these. But, thanks for being willing to try!

Hi Leo,
Well done. I am a time/life management addict and this is a good addition to my habit. I was an in-house trainer for Franklin-Covey and a GTD convert before moving to something very similar to what you have laid out in ZTD. Essentially, GTD is just too much for me and I like to keep things as simple as possible. I like your idea of the MITs, but unless you are in very project oriented job (as compared to a task oriented job) most people probably have more then 3 MITs in a day. My daily list normally targets 5.
The only other thing I would suggest adding is to take some photographs of your implementation in your Moleskine and place them out on Flickr or within your blog. I would be curious to see what your daily page looks like, where you keep your project lists at in your notebook, and what your project pages look like.
A couple of sites that you might enjoy include GSD by Bill Westerman and his photos on Flickr. If the links don’t come through on your comments, let me know and I will send them to you.
Thanks again,
Alan

this will be the first e-book i’ve ever bought. i don’t really like the idea of e-books, or digital media. i’d much prefer having a hardcopy of whatever i’m buying. that’s especially so with books. a computer screen can’t replace the sensation of sitting back with a book, scanning and flipping the pages…

but i recommend you trying to get it published.

Leo, there is nothing I can say about you that hasn’t been said 10,000 before and that’s a waste of our productivity! But let me add something: for those of us who love the GTD system but were intimidated by its “all or nothing” approach, you have outlined an amazingly straightforward way to dip your toe in the water! I have all of Allen’s stuff, I love his attitude and approach. But I become overwhelmed with the set-up process and abandon ship when I don’t have the right “tools” to implement the program. With ZTD, I need my notebook (have 712 in my office right now, waiting for me to fill them up!) and a pencil (actually, I vote to indulge myself here with a pen I love to use that is beautiful and makes writing a pleasure) and an inbox (have ‘em!). Thank you, from the bottom on my anxiety-ridden heart! I look forward to changing my habits over the coming months and I look forward to having the first holiday season in years that isn’t riddled with missed celebrations, lost gift lists and forgotten commitments! I’ve been on a simplicity/productivity search of late, and have recently discovered lifehacker.com and from there other sites including yours. I surfed around a bit, liked what I saw, and read all of the comments here about your e-book. With little exposure except what I read today, I bought your e-book, sight unseen as it were. I’ve just started to skim it this evening, but I like what I see, and if the comments here are any indication (and I’m sure they are) I’ve found a new favorite website and a new book. Keep up the good work, and congrats!

@Solomon - This book is already at a bargain price for the information contained within. Perhaps you could consider the affilliate programme to earn funds to pay for your book?

Printing issues fixed.
I just bought it & printed it. I had a few issues:
Using Adobe 8.0 on Windows to print: crashed acrobat
I was able to print a flattend PDF with PDF995
evince on linux: no crash, but no print either.
xpdf print to a postscript file, then print that. Success!
I’m guessing some of the issues people had viewing it might be because the eBook is PDF 1.4?

I grew up in and married into families long steeped in a work ethic that says ‘work before fun’, for whom there was always something more practical that needed doing, especially for an eldest child with many younger siblings and a large extended family. Now I am fifty-one. I still have young children at home, but for the first time in my life, they are all in school at the same time, and my house is in enough order that I can finally look seriously at my dreams.
By accident that day that I got serious, i came across your blog How to Doggedly Pursue Your Dreams in the Face of Naysayers. Providence. I signed up for the forums, and look forward to learning.
Both my husband and I have been paying it forward and asking our children and others to, for years. I certainly will continue to do so. If I am early enough for your kind offer, that’s providence, too. If not, I will buy it anyway. Money is tight at the moment, but

Hi Leo.
I only started receiving your newsletter a short time ago, I hesitated to sign up for it, because I hate those sites that are all about “just think warm, fuzzy thoughts, and everything will be better!” It’s not that I don’t believe that thinking positive is good, but I also believe that “actions speak louder than words”. However, I am glad that I tried out you mailing after all, I enjoy the fact that you simply reflect and attempt change in daily living, little things.
I faithfully promise to continue to do as many small acts of kindness as I can for the strangers I come into contact with!
Your stories of the DMV worker and the person who paid back your faith by repaying you for your book, refuel my belief that we do make a difference in the world around us!
Thank you in advance for my copy of “Zen to Done”
Keep believing, Robin

Thank you for your generous offer of a free “Zen to Done” e-book. Even if I’m not among the group who responds in time to receive it, I appreciate your kindness, and I promise to pay your kindness forward, whether I get the free book or not.
Regarding kindness to others, many years ago I realized that some of my compassion to others, some of my volunteering (with abused women, children, and shelter animals), some of my acts of selflessness, were more for MY benefit than for that of the recipients. I came to depend on others’ responses to my acts of compassions, and to crave the positive feedback I was getting. Of course, a starving cat doesn’t care WHY you feed it, but I came to realize that to grow my soul I needed to perform acts truly for their own worth, not for my own self-aggrandizement.
I made a vow to do at least one kind, compassionate thing a day anonomously. (I still do things that others know about, but they don’t count toward my daily quota). It has been so wonderful for my personal growth to know that at least once a day my heart is acting, not my wish for recognition as a good person.
It’s a lot of fun, too, trying to come up with truly anonymous kindnesses.
I love your site. Thank you for the heart and soul you pour into it.

I like the book so far, but you need to define some terms before you use them. For instance the book suggests doing your “MITs” without ever saying what an MIT is.
Good luck.

Great read, just finished. Suggest you look at the definition of MIT though, you have it the wrong way around. i.e.
Zen To Done (ZTD) - right
MIT (most important tasks) - not so right.
Also is it possible to get it in an a4/printable version?

I’m enjoying the ebook so far! I wanted to give this out to my coworkers.. but there’s no gift option! It’s kind of weird to download the same file and send as attachment? It’ll seem like I’m just sending them what I have. It would be nice to have an option to send it as a gift with a message. Just thought. Thanks for the great ebook!

Thanks for doing the eBook. But I am personally very disappointed in it, from a usability standpoint.
The format is “pretty,” and pretty distracting. The sidebar pull quotes are way to big, so they squeeze the content into a narrower column, requiring more scrolling, etc.
Who wants to read that much online? But your format is terrible for printing. First, lots of extraneous stuff, to “fnacy it up” and, maybe, justify selling it? It needs no jsutification; its good! But all the snazz is not only a distraction, it would take a hell of a lot of ink to print, but adds zilch.
Why provide the forms if they are not savable and printable? In an ot themselves?
On the copy of ZTD that I’ve made for myself, I’ve included the essentials of the articles you link to, that are most directly pertinent to implementing, including dealing with habits, jumpstarting the day, etc.
To tell you the truth, now that I’ve got the eBook, I don’t know what to do with it. I expect I’ve go back to the word document I assembled from the website.
I do appreciate the work you are doing - thanks!
Christian

@Rajesh: Great question! And the answer is: most definitely. ZTD borrows some concepts from GTD (which didn’t invent these concepts, btw, but they are great ones) … but the system stands alone. You don’t need to read anything to read and understand and benefit from ZTD. In fact, my intent was to keep the system as simple to understand and use as possible, so you should be able to read and implement it immediately.

Hi Leo - I just wanted to tell you that I purchased the eBook and read it on the plane on my way to FL for my winter holidays. The eBook is fantastic and I’ve already started to use some of the ZTD suggestions to good effect in my own life.
Your work inspired me to write my own eBook - on a totally different topic of course - during the holiday break!
( http://1winedude.blogspot.com/2008/01/1winewine-dude-ebook-how-to-taste-like.html ). So I should thank you for that as well (in fact I did, in the ‘Thanks’ section of my eBook)!

I need to know how big the pdf file is so I can tell if it will fit on my Palm Pilot.
If you would consider converting it to the Palm Reader “.pdb” format that would be great. Palm Reader has a free .pdb converter.
Thanks for making this available. I think it is a great way for people to contribute and keep your fantastic site going.

Stumbled onto yours through Lifehacker, which I found through the book, not the site. Have read/tried GTD, and your opening comments in your eBook typify my issues with that method, especially my lack of discrimination once everything is on the list.
Your price-point for the eBook is well-chosen, as I bought it sight unseen, site unread, except for the comments here.
Looking forward to your next book.
Thanks

Hi Leo,
I just bought and dl’d the book, and started reading it.
Looks nice so far, although I’ve already read most of the stuff on your site (hope this time I’ll finally implement it, at last).
However, I do agree with the previous poster that it’s probably a bit too much “prettied up”, and the sidebar quotes are too big while the main text column is too narrow. I also agree that the forms should be seperately saveable and printable. Maybe some improvements for the second edition?
